1.6 Warnings
• The long-term effects of chronic electrical stimulation are unknown.
• Stimulation should not be applied over the neck or mouth. Severe spasm of
the laryngeal and pharyngeal muscles may occur and the contractions may be
strong enough to close the airway or cause difficulty in breathing.
• Stimulation should not be applied transthoracically in that the introduction of
electrical current into the heart may cause cardiac arrhythmias.
• Stimulation should not be applied over swollen, infected, or inflamed areas or
skin eruptions, e.g. phlebitis, thrombophlebitis, varicose veins, etc.
• NMES should not be applied over, or in proximity to, cancerous lesions.
• Safety of NMES and TENS for use during pregnancy has not been established.
• Keep out of the reach of children.
• TENS devices have no curative value.
• TENS is not effective for pain of central origin.
• TENS devices should be used only under the continued supervision of a
physician.
• TENS is a symptomatic treatment and as such suppresses the
sensation of pain which would otherwise serve as a protective mechanism.
• Electronic monitoring equipment (such as ECG monitors and alarms) may not
operate properly when TENS/NMES stimulation is in use.
• The safety and efficacy of NMES/TENS depends on the proper use and
handling of the device and accessories. If used improperly, NMES/TENS has
a potentially hazardous electrical output. It must be used only as prescribed.
Electrode or lead wire burns may result from misuse. Electrodes and lead
wires should be securely fastened to prevent inadvertent disconnection or
burns resulting from the metal portion of the lead wire touching the skin
while the device is connected and operating. Electrodes and lead wires will
eventually wear out. Check accessories regularly for signs of wear, and replace
as necessary.
• Simultaneous connection of patient to a h-f surgical equipment may result
in burns at the site of the stimulator electrodes and possible damage to
the stimulator. Operation in close proximity (e.g. 1 m) to a shortwave or
microwave therapy equipment may produce instability in the stimulator
output.
• Care must be taken when operating this equipment adjacent to or stacked with
other equipment. Potential electromagnetic or other interference could occur to
this or to the other equipment. Try to minimize this interference by not using
other equipment in conjunction with it.
• Use only accessories that are specially designed for this unit and recommended
by Empi. The use of other accessories or cables may result in increased
emissions or decreased immunity of this unit.
1.7 Precautions
• Caution should be used for patients with suspected or diagnosed heart
problems.
