PREPARATION FOR APPLYING MANUAL METAL ARC WELDING (MMA/SMAW)
10.1 Machine preparation
Connect the work clamp (ground) to the piece to be welded. Make sure there is a good electrical connection in the
equipment. Remove any rust, paint, or any contamination using a wire brush or polisher (grinder, angle grinder)
before connecting.
If you use a metal table for welding you should regularly check the connection of the work clamp (ground) for signs
of contamination or corrosion. A good ground connection is essential for good results in the welding application.
10.2. Electrodes for SMAW/MMA welding
Most SMAW electrodes connect to the positive pole, although some types of electrodes must be
connected to the negative pole. Connect according to the type at either the + or - pole connectors.
The most important thing is that the user considers the manufacturer's instructions that appear on the
electrode package, there they will indicate the correct polarity of the electrode and the appropriate
current level.
The welding current must be regulated according to the diameter of the electrode with which it is worked
and the type of joint to be made. See below the current corresponding to various electrode diameters:
The user should consider that, according to the diameter of the electrode, higher current values should be
used for a flat weld, while for vertical or overhead welds, the common values are necessary.
The mechanical character of the weld will be determined not only by the current intensity used, but also by
other parameters such as the diameter and quality of the electrode, the length of the arc, the speed and the
position of the user. It will also depend on the state of the electrodes in use, since they must be protected
from moisture, leaving them in their packaging until they are used.
10.3 Electrode ignition
Insert the electrode into the jaw of the electrode holder by pressing the lever on the
electrode holder. Make sure you have proper eye protection (face shield) before you start
welding.
Note: UV radiation damage is particularly high during arc start.
