TRANSFER OF PATIENT FROM ONE PATIENT SUPPORT PLATFORM TO ANOTHER

WARNING
−
Leave the frame in the lowest position when the patient is unattended to help reduce the number and severity of
falls.
−
Patient stability and side rail coverage may be compromised with the use of an overlay. When using an overlay,
extra caution and/or supervision is required to help reduce the likelihood of a patient falling.
−
The safe use of the support surface is maximized when used in conjunction with side rails; there may be an
increased risk of falls when side rails are not present. Serious injury or death can result from the use (potential
entrapment) or non-use (potential patient falls) of side rails or other restraints. Local policies regarding the use of
side rails should be taken into account. Whether and how to use side rails is a decision that should be based on
each patient's individual needs and should be made by the physician, operators, and responsible parties.

When placing a patient on the support surface, ensure the opposite side rail is raised to reduce the risk of patient
fall.

The risk of entrapment can develop when the support surface is placed on bed frames that leave gaps of even a few
inches between the support surface and the headboard, footboard, and side rails. Do not use the support surface
when such gaps are present.

Using a Pioneer support surface on a stretcher frame that has a larger width than the support surface may result in
sliding and patient injury (see Specifications section on page 6).

Extra precautions are needed for a patient at risk of a fall (i.e., agitated or confused) to help reduce the likelihood of
a fall.
−
To reduce risk of patient or user injury and support surface damage, do not exceed the safe working load of the
hospital bed frame when supporting both the patient and the support surface.
−
To avoid the risk of injury or equipment damage, do not transfer the patient from one platform to another using the
support surface.

PROCEDURE
To transfer the patient from one patient support platform (for example, stretcher, gurney, operating table) to another:
1. Position one patient support platform alongside the other patient support platform as closely as possible.
2. Set the brakes to "ON" for both patient support platforms.
3. Prior to transfer of patient between fixed patient support surfaces, ensure that the surfaces are level with one
another.
4. Raise the patient support platform side rail located opposite the patient transfer.
5. Transfer the patient following all applicable safety rules and institution protocols to ensure patient and operator
safety.

CAUTION
−
Be aware of devices or equipment placed on the top of the support surface. Damage to the surface may occur due
to the weight of the equipment, heat generated by the equipment, or sharp edges on the equipment.

Do not put overlays or accessories inside the cover. Doing so may reduce pressure redistribution performance.
−
It is the responsibility of the caregiver team to evaluate the appropriate CPR protocol to be used with the surface.
