β-Ketone Measurement for Type 1 Diabetic Users
Lo–0.5 mmol/L
Re-test for blood ketones only if the blood
glucose levels are higher than 120 mg/dL.
Revert to routine blood glucose monitoring.
0.5–1.5 mmol/L
Re-test for blood glucose and ketone
2 hourly. Report to medical sta if the ketone
levels do not fall as the insulin dosage may
need reviewing. Continue to monitor
4 hourly until the patient is back on a
subcutaneous insulin regime.
Resume testing for blood ketone level if
blood glucose level is above 120 mg/dL.

1.5–3.0 mmol/L
Refer to medical sta for assessment for
DKA*. Re-test blood glucose and ketone
2 hourly.
3.0 mmol/L and higher
Monitor blood ketone and glucose hourly
and refer to the medical team for
assessment for DKA*. It is expected that
blood ketone level will reduce by
0.4 mmol/L per hour. If this is not being
achieved, ask a doctor to review
management.
* DKA: Diabetic Ketoacidosis
