Instructions for Use
Plateau Exhalation Valve
The Plateau Exhalation Valve is a multi-patient use exhalation device that provides a
continuous leak path in the patient circuit when used with CPAP and bi-level systems.
Caution: U.S. federal law restricts this device to sale by or on the order of a physician.
Important Note: Using the Plateau Exhalation Valve may cause a Respironics Detachable
Control Panel (DCP) to display Est V
When the Plateau Exhalation Valve is used in a circuit, the DCP should not be used as the
only basis for establishing tidal volume.

Warning
Warnings:
• This warning applies to almost all CPAP devices. The Plateau Exhalation Valve should be used
with the CPAP system recommended by your healthcare professional or respiratory therapist. As
with any exhalation device, do not apply the mask to your face unless the CPAP device is turned
on and operating properly. To allow a continuous flow of air out of the mask, the vent holes in
the exhalation port must never be blocked. When the CPAP device is turned on and functioning
properly, new air from the CPAP device flushes exhaled air out through the exhalation port's
vent holes. However, when the CPAP device is not operating, enough fresh air will not be
provided through the mask, and exhaled air may be rebreathed. Rebreathing of exhaled air for
longer than several minutes can, in some circumstances, lead to suffocation.
• As with most CPAP devices, at low CPAP pressures, the air flow through the exhalation port may
not be enough to clear all the exhaled gas (CO
the air that you have exhaled.
• Hand wash prior to first use. Inspect for damage or wear. Discard and replace any components
as necessary.
• For children and those who are pregnant or breast feeding: This product may contain
chemicals (phthalates) which may cause adverse health effects. Healthcare professionals should
discuss the implications of using this product.
Connecting the Valve
Position the valve so that the exhaust vent is facing away from the body (Figure 1). Insert the
outlet of the valve (the non-rotating end) into the user interface connector. Twist the valve
slightly to ensure a good seal. Connect the tubing to the other end.
Note: The valve is equipped with two pressure pick-off ports. These may be used to
monitor air pressure. Close the port caps when the ports are not in use.
Verifying the Valve Function
Warning: Prior to use, and especially after cleaning, verify the valve operation using the
following procedure.
Make sure the diaphragm alignment tab is visible through the cap slot (Figure 2). Turn the unit
ON. With the palm of your hand, completely block the outlet and verify that the diaphragm
rises toward the cap. Verify that air is flowing from the exhaust vent on the valve. Remove your
hand from the outlet and verify that the diaphragm falls away from the cap.
