Design & Operation
Watts hair, sediment and solids interceptors are designed to separate sand, hair,
sediment and other solids from waste water. Perforated baffle plates diffuse the flow
of water into the interceptor and slow down the turbulence of the water and debris
that enter the interceptor chamber. The baffles stop the solids between the inlet
and baffle. The accumulation can be removed as the retaining bucket is filled. When
properly cleaned and maintained, the interceptor creates a smooth even flow of
waste water where contaminates are trapped and separated from the regular water.
Concerns When Installing Interceptors
A) Hair, sediment and solids interceptors should be installed as close as possible to
the fixture(s) being served. Interceptors may be floor mounted under or beside
the sink, recessed in the floor to allow passage of foot traffic, or connected to
below grade piping. Interceptors installed outside should be below the frost line
(See Options - Extension).
B) The hair, sediment and solids interceptor process is accomplished by directing
incoming water through the unit where solids fall and collect inside a sediment
bucket. Water slows as it enters the inlet connection and travels through the unit
at a slower pace which causes turbulence that pushes the solids down into a
sediment bucket.
C) Sediment buckets that collect the debris should be monitored periodically to
ensure that they are emptied and cleaned on a regular basis. Proper cleaning and
maintenance will ensure that the interceptor operates at maximum efficiency.
D) The cleaning and maintenance of the interceptor will be dependent upon proper
placement for sufficient clearance in removing the cover and baffle.
E) Interceptor lines should be "trapped" to prevent gaseous fumes from escaping
into the fixture(s) being serviced.
F) Interceptors that are being installed below grade may need an extension
Watts hair, sediment and solids interceptors offer up to a 12" extension to
accommodate below grade installations.
Sizing
Watts Li Series Interceptors are sized according to flow rate,l or the number of
washing machines serviced.
There are no sizing requirements for SI Series interceptors. Units are supplied with
IPS threaded or no hub inlet and outlet, sized as required. Maximum operating flow
is the lesser of 30 GPM, or the drainage flow associated with piping size.
