11.2 Scale + Immerser pending
11.2.1 Material
• 100 ml Flask
• Immerser with its conversion table.
• Thermometer 0-35ºC resolution 0.5ºC
• Electronic balance
11.2.2 Procedure
Before start, check that ambient temperature is stable inside 20 ±3ºC and
the distilled liquid temperature is stable inside 20±0.5ºC .
• Put the distilled in the 100ml flask.
• Insert the thermometer.
• Wait 1 minute and read the temperature.
• Remove the thermometer. Insert completely the immerser.
• Wait 1 minute. Take a read from electronic balance and calculate the %Vol from
the conversion table supplied with the immerser.
• Repeat the reading, at least 3 times and average. Write the result, only with 2
tenth. Round second tenth at 0 or 5.
• If the measured temperature, once round it is not 20ºC (p.e. 20.4ºC is round at
20ºC; 20.6ºC is round at 21ºC) the %Vol must be corrected according table 1.
11.3 ABBE Refractometer
11.3.1 Material
• Abbe Refractometer range 1.330 to 1.346.
11.3.2 Procedure
There are 2 types of refractometers:
• Without temperature measurement.
• With temperature measurement.
On the first case, before using the refractometer and measuring the %Vol, remain
refractometer and the sample in a chamber at 20±0.5ºC for a 4h period. Then meas-
ure it in a room at 20±3ºC.
On the second case probably, the refractometer has the capacity to climate the
measuring area and the sample at 20ºC. Before reading the refraction index, check
that temperature is in 20 ±0.5ºC .
Follow the refractometer instructions sheet to read the refraction index.
By means of table 2, look for the %Vol by introducing the refraction index.
Remember to check the refractometer calibration.
The presence of methanol on the distilled produces a lower refraction index in front
of a pure hydroalcoholic solution (Ethanol - Water). The hydroalcoholic solutions are
used for calibration standards.
