9.12 Use of polarized light
1. Move the polarizer "PO" into the light path until
the slider clicks into its position. (Fig. 32)
2. Move the rotatable analyzer "AN" into the light
path until the slider clicks into its position. (Fig.
33)
3. Put a flat mirror on the stage and get into appro-
ximate focus the mirror surface.
4. While observing into the eyepieces, rotate the
scale of the analyzer ① until you achieve the
darkest image. (Fig. 34)

Now the light extinction (so-called "crossed Nicol
position") is achieved.
5. Put a specimen on the stage, focus the specimen
and begin observation.
