12. Use of the microscope in Polarized light (PO)

The performance of polarizer may deteriorate
when it has been exposed to light for a long pe-
riod (about continuous 2000 hours). If this hap-
pens, replace the polarizer.
1. Move the lever in "BF" position for brightfield illumination.
(Fig. 21)
Polarized light observation cannot be performed when
the BF/DF selector is in "DF" position.
2. Insert the polarizer "PO" with the inscription facing the user.
3. Move the polarizer "PO" into the light path until the slider
clicks into its position. (Fig. 34)
4. Insert analyzer "AN" with the inscription facing up.
5. Move the rotatable analyzer "AN" into the light path until the
slider clicks into its position. (Fig. 35)
6. Put a flat mirror on the stage and get into approximate focus
the mirror surface.
7. While observing into the eyepieces, rotate the scale of the
analyzer ① until you achieve the darkest image. (Fig. 36)
Now the light extinction (so-called "crossed Nicol position")
is achieved.
8. Put a specimen on the stage, focus the specimen and begin
