Switch on the unit with the switch (4) [position "ON"].
The POWER LED (12) will light up.
5.1 Announcements
1) Prior to an announcement, use the switch CHIME
(3) to define whether the chime is to sound prior to
and after the announcement (position "ON") or not
(position "OFF"). If the adjustment is changed
during an announcement, it will not take effect until
the next announcement is made.
2) Shortly press the TALK button (6).
3) Wait for the automatic chime, if it is activated. When
the LED above the TALK button lights up, start the
announcement. Speak into the microphone (1) at
close range.
4) To end the announcement, press the TALK button
once again. The LED above the button will be ex-
tinguished and the end chime will sound, if it is ac-
tivated.
Note: A signal available at the audio input (14) will be
added to the announcement.
5.2 Recordings
The ECM-550DM allows recording and replay of
music, audio signals, jingles, or announcements which
are frequently made. The storage capacity is 89 re-
cordings with a total maximum duration of 60 minutes.
For making a recording, proceed as follows:
1) Via the keypad (5), enter the number under which
the recording is to be memorized. The numbers 1 to
89 are available. To correct a number entered, press
the button CANCEL/END (17) and enter the number
again. It is not possible to directly overwrite a num-
ber which is reserved already; the corresponding
recording must be erased first (see chapter 5.5).
2) Press the button RECORD (13) within approx.
3 seconds. The number entered on the display (10)
and the LED next to the button RECORD will flash
if the number is not reserved.
3) Press the button RECORD once again to confirm.
Once the LED now flashing more rapidly starts to
light continuously, recording via the microphone will
start. A stereo signal from the audio input (14) will
be added as a mono signal so that e. g. music from
a CD may be recorded.
While the recording is made, it can be checked
via headphones connected. Adjust the signal
source at the audio input to such a level that no
distortions will occur.
4) To end the recording, press the button CANCEL/
END (17). The LED next to the button RECORD will
be extinguished. If the memory is full, the recording
will end automatically. In this case, there will be a
countdown of the last 30 seconds on the display.
To check a recording, see chapter 5.3 "Prelistening to
a recording".

5.3 Prelistening to a recording
Prelistening to a memorized recording is possible. In
this case, it will only be replayed via the speaker (8) or
headphones connected, however, not via the output
(2) leading to the amplifier system.
1) If the display (10) does not show the desired num-
ber, enter the number of the recording via the key-
pad (5). To correct a number entered, press the but-
ton CANCEL/END (17) and enter the number
again.
2) Press the button PREVIEW (15). The LED next to
the button will light up until the end of the replay. If
the number on the display starts flashing instead, a
recording with this number does not exist.
3) To stop the replay, press the button CANCEL/
END (17).
5.4 Replaying a recording
For replaying a recording via the output (2) and the
speaker (8) or headphones connected, proceed as fol-
lows:
1) If the display (10) does not show the desired num-
ber, enter the number of the recording via the key-
pad (5). To correct a number entered, press the but-
ton CANCEL/END (17) and enter the number
again.
2) Press the button PLAY (16). The LED next to the
button will light up until the end of the replay. With
the switch CHIME (3) in position "ON", the corre-
sponding start or end chime will sound prior to and
after the replay of the announcement selected. If
instead of a replay only the number on the display
starts flashing, a recording with this number does
not exist.
3) To stop the replay, press the button CANCEL/
END (17).
5.4.1 Announcement during a replay
A recording which is being replayed can be interrupted
for an announcement.
1) Press the TALK button (6). The LED above the but-
ton will light up and the current replay will be
stopped. In this case, no chime will sound.
2) Speak into the microphone (1).
3) At the end of the announcement, press the TALK
button once again. The replay will be continued
without a chime. The LED above the button will be
extinguished.
5.5 Erasing a recording
Recordings which are no longer required can be
erased. Recordings which are to be replaced must
also be erased first:
1) Enter the number of the recording to be erased via
the keypad (5), even if it is already shown on the
display (10). To correct a number entered, press the
button CANCEL/END (17) and enter the number
again.
