1
After switching on, the detector sets to
sensitivity level 5. At said level the acoustic
signal is constant and rapid.
2
In case a higher sensitivity level is needed,
press
or press
for a lower level.
3
Begin to search possible leaks. Start at a
joint moving the detector at a speed of
25mm/s (1 inch/s) approximately, keeping
the sensor tip at a distance between 4
and 6mm (1/6 to ¼") from the area to be
tested.
4
When halogenated refrigerant concentra-
tion increases, a siren type acoustic alarm
is issued and light signals are received
through LEDs.
5
Verify that the leak is actually located at
that point checking that same result is ob-
tained when moving the detector from an
area with no leak (no alarm) to the tested
area (with alarm). Repeat from a number
of directions. Also, make sure of the result
placing the detector in an area away from
the leak, reset the level, lower the sensiti-
vity level and check the leak again.
6
Once the leak has been confi rmed, mark
the area and resume the test.
7
Next action to avoid likely ambiguities is to
clean the affected area with dry cloths and
blow the area with clean air. Then repeat
step 5.
NOTE
If the alarm activates outside the area to be
tested, press the RESET button and set the level
to 0.
Considerations. Recommended procedure
for leak detection
1
It is recommended that a preliminary ins-
pection is carried out searching for points
with oil and dirt in the areas more prone
to leaks, such as coils, compressors, joints,
welds,etc.
2
In areas where the atmosphere is contami-
nated with certain percentage of residual
halogenated refrigerant, use the RESET
button to ignore that level of contamina-
tion. In this way the existing level will be
12
construed as the starting point to look for
leaks.
3
In windy areas, the halogenated refrige-
rant may disperse rapidly from the leak
area, thus the engineer must use wind
screens to prevent this from happening.
Said effect can take place by the presence
of fans, and all air fl ow sources in the area
must be disconnected.
4
Leak detection in evaporators and con-
densers is complicated because these
are enclosed systems in the vicinity of
fans to move the air. In these cases, it is
recommended that fans operate for 10
seconds and then switch off. Because
most halogenated refrigerants are heavier
than air, they go to the lowest part of the
system, so we wait for 10-15 minutes
to allow for build up. A detector alarm
signal will mean a leak in the system and
in most of cases replacement of the tested
equipment.
5
In order to avoid false alarms, the sensor
tip must be protected against moisture,
contaminants or solvents.

Maintenance

Adequate maintenance is important to extend
detector useful life and improve detector func-
tionality.
Warning: To remove the sensor tip, make sure
the detector is switched off. Voltage across the
tip could result in electrical discharge.
Keep the tip clean: Use cotton or compressed
air to clean the tip protection.
If the sensor tip should be contaminated, soak it
in pure alcohol for a few minutes and then dry
it with compressed air or with a cloth.
Note: Never use strong solvents such as petrol,
mineral oil, turpentine or similar. These types
of solvents build up a fi lm on the sensor tip,
reducing the sensitivity impairing the detector
response.
Always keep the detector and sensor tips in a
dry and clean place.

Special maintenance

The detector includes a calibration certifi cate, but if a calibration certifi cate is needed, send the sca-
le to the Technical Service Department and a calibration will be made after approval of a previous
estimate.
In any case, the detector may not be opened to perform any work on it. Any work will invalidate
the guarantee.
