Safety standards

1
The equipment is aimed exclusively for
professional fi tters that must know the
principles of refrigeration, refrigeration
systems, refrigerant gases and likely dama-
ge caused by pressure equipment.
2
The present manual must be read tho-
roughly, strict observance of the steps
herewith described being an essential
condition for user safety and equipment
integrity, as well as maintaining the stated
performance.
3
Using applicable protections, such as
goggles and gloves, is recommended; co-
ming into contact with the refrigerant can
cause blindness and other injures.
4
Always work away from fl ames and hot
surfaces; at elevated temperatures, the
refrigerant gas breaks down, releasing
toxic and aggressive substances, harmful
for users and the environment.
5
Avoid skin contact; the low boiling point
of the refrigerant liquid (about –18ºC/-
3ºF), can cause frostbite.
6
Avoid inhaling refrigerant fumes. Narcotic
effect.
7
To avoid risk of fi re, the battery must be
recharged in open spaces away from spa-
ces containing fl ammable gases.

Introduction

Description of the electronic leak detector
for ROTHENBERGER halogenated
refrigerants
Portable electronic leak detector, which can
detect leaks of halogenated refrigerants (CFCs,
HCFCs, HFCs, etc) in all types of Heating-Venti-
lating-Air Conditioning-Refrigerating (hereafter
HVAC&R) systems, such as domestic and car air
conditioning, refrigerators, etc., thanks to the
leading edge microprocessor and digital control.
This equipment is a must for HVAC&R specia-
lists.
Non-halogenated refrigerant leaks (ammonia,
hydrogen, carbon dioxide, etc.) are not detected
by the equipment.

Setup

The detector is supplied with the battery char-
ged, but it might be discharged for a number of
reasons. Therefore, the battery must undergo a
fi rst charge prior to using it for the fi rst time. In
order to minimise the risk posed by fl ammable
gases in enclosed spaces, batteries must be
charged in open spaces or in enclosed spaces
without the presence of fl ammable gases. De-
tector on/off switch may not be operated while
the battery is being charged.

Battery charging

Plug the AC adapter into the leak detector
connection. LEDs light on to give the following
information:
Red light (continuous): Battery being
charged.
Green light: Battery charged.
Red light (intermittent): adapter or detec-
tor not properly connected.

Fit-Replace sensor tip

The equipment is supplied with a sensor tip ins-
talled and a spare. For the detector to operate
properly, the sensor tip must be installed.
Prior to fi rst installation or replacing a sensor
tip, make sure the equipment is switched off.
Always use ROTHENBERGER sensor tips, using
any other tip may result in failure or malfunc-
tion.
In order to replace a sensor tip, just unscrew
manually the tip to be replaced and screw the
spare in. Tighten the tip manually until it is well
fi xed.

Notes prior to using

1
In order to fi nd leak locations in HVAC&R
systems, the system must be at a normal
working pressure or at least at a minimum
pressure of 3 bar (50 psi). Also, bear in
mind that at temperatures below 15 ºC
(59 ºF) system pressure can go down and
leak detection become more diffi cult. This
does not mean there were no leaks but
they were not detected, so that checking
the pressure prior to detection is very
important.
2
Leak detection can often be the result of
contamination with compressor oil or dirt,
therefore preventing the sensor tip from
being in contact with said contaminants is
important.
3
The detector operating principle is to
measure relative changes of halogen con-
centration on the sensor tip. The capability
to detect said change is a function of the
technique and operator training. Use the
manual sensitivity setting or reset and
follow the instructions manual.

Procedure for use

Switch the equipment on by pressing the
ON/OFF button.
Just after switching the equipment on, the fi rst
LED to the left lights on for 3 seconds after
which the equipment performs a checking and
the normal heating phase commences. This fi rst
LED will show the battery status as long as the
equipment is switched on:
Red light: the battery charge is enough for
normal use
Orange light: the battery is running out
and must be charged as soon as possible
and prior to detection.
Just now, the acoustic signal is constant, the
detector goes to level 0 with respect to the
level of refrigerant in the atmosphere and will
stay in stand by after 3 seconds, ready for use
following the instructions:
