Directions
1.
The Cannula Assembly, Plunger and Adapter should be transferred to the
sterile field using proper technique.
2.
Palpate and locate the entry point.
3.
Using aseptic technique, prep the skin. If desired, apply local anesthetic to the
prepped area.
4.
Remove the Lightning Needle Cannula Assembly (Cannula and Trocar),
Plunger, and Driver Adaptor from sterile package(s).
IMPORTANT: Needle is sharp, do not remove protective cover.
5.
Collect 10mL of Heparin (concentration of 1000 units/mL) from a Heparin-
labeled cup on the sterile field into a Heparin-labeled luer syringe.
IMPORTANT: Ensure that the patient record has been checked for history
of Heparin allergy. For patients with a Heparin allergy, ACD-A should be
used as the anticoagulant in place of Heparin.
6.
Using caution to avoid the sharp end of the Trocar, aseptically remove
(unthread) the Trocar from Cannula, leaving the Trocar in the sterile field for
reassembly (see step 9).
7.
Connect the Heparin-containing syringe to the threaded end of the Cannula.
Flush Cannula with 10mL of Heparin while dispensing the Heparin back into
the Heparin-labeled cup.
8.
Once flush is complete, disconnect syringe from Cannula.
9.
Using caution to avoid the sharp end of the Trocar, thread the Trocar back into
Cannula ensuring the groves (threading) on Trocar hub align with groves on
Cannula hub.
10.
Securely attach the Driver Adapter to the Surgical Drill.
11.
Secure Cannula Assembly to the Driver Adapter on the Surgical Drill.
IMPORTANT: Be careful to maintain sterile technique.
IMPORTANT: Control the patient's movement prior to and during
Cannula Assembly insertion.
12.
Carefully remove the protective cover from the Cannula Assembly.
13.
Position Cannula Assembly over the entry point at the appropriate angle to the
bone.
14.
Slightly power or manually press Cannula Assembly tip through the skin until
the tip touches bone.
15.
Activate the Surgical Drill and insert the Cannula Assembly into the bone with
gentle, steady pressure until the desired depth is attained.
16.
While applying gentle downward pressure to the Cannula Assembly, remove
the Surgical Drill and Adapter from the Trocar hub and set aside.
17.
While applying gentle downward pressure to the Cannula, carefully remove
(unthread) the Trocar from the Cannula by turning the Trocar hub one and a
half turns counterclockwise and pulling back gently. Confirm Cannula stability.
18.
Insert the Plunger into the Cannula and seat fully.
19.
While applying gentle downward pressure to the Cannula, gently remove the
Plunger from the Cannula.
20.
Thread a Heparin-coated syringe onto the Cannula hub and while applying
gentle downward pressure to the cannula, begin marrow aspiration by gently
pulling back on the syringe plunger.
IMPORTANT: Do not pull back on the syringe body as this may
destabilize the Cannula.
