„ A clamp is a device that must be clean when used. Dirt has an adverse effect on the operation
and also on the reliability of the clamp. When cleaning the clamp care should be taken to
ensuring that moving parts are lubricated and the gripping surfaces are clean. Regular cleaning
will enhance the life and reliability of the clamps.

Inspections protocols
Prior to every application of the clamp it is important the clamp operator inspects the clamp for
proper functioning. Attention must be paid to the following (see illustration(s) 2 for part reference):
„ Ensure that the plate surface with which the clamp is to come into contact is free of scale,
grease, oil, paint, water, ice, moisture, dirt and coatings that might impede the contact of the
gripping surface with the plate.
„ Check the frame elements (N) for damage, cracks or deformation (this might indicate
overloading).
„ Check the lifting eye (D) and the hinge block (R) (IPTKU(D)), The hinge shaft and nut (Q) (check
also the cotter pin (L) which locks the nut), hoisting shaft (I) and nut (check also the roll pin (P)
that holds the hinge shaft) for clearly visible wear and/or damage.
„ Check the lever (H) for blocking the spindle (IPTKUD) can be operated smoothly and is locking
in two positions.
„ Check the screw spindle (O) for its function by opening and closing the clamp with the hand
grip (X). The spindle should be easily rotatable over its full length. The clamp must open and
close properly (when the operation of the clamp is stiff or heavy, it should be removed from
operation for inspection).
„ Check whether the W.L.L. and the jaw opening stamped on the body corresponds with the
load to be lifted. When this is no longer readable, remove the clamp from operation.
IPTK(W) - IPTKU(D) clamps are particularly prone to the following defects:
The thread of the screw spindle of this clamp may become damaged. These defects may result in
the clamp not opening and closing properly. This, when the clamp does not close on the beam,
can become a source of hazardous situations. It is therefore extremely important to check the
spindle on each occasion prior to use. Also equally important is that these defects be avoided. The
spindle can in fact only be damaged by careless use of the clamp.
Another form of damage to this clamp is deformation of the body. The plates in the body elements
are then generally bent. This may have the effect that the body does not close properly. Deforma-
tion of the body is caused by exceeding the load or the load angle of the clamp. You should for this
reason check not only the body for defects but also ensure that the lifting conditions are correct.
In doubtful cases an authorised repairer should assess the clamp.

How to operate the clamp
The IPTKU(D) lifting clamps are suitable for use as:
- lifting clamp for steel beams
- lashing clamp for steel beams
- temporary tackle eye on steel beams
The IPTK(W) lifting clamps are suitable for use as:
- lifting clamp for steel beams
- temporary tackle eye on steel beams
