g.) Do not use defective accessories. Before
each use, check accessories such as grinding
wheels for chipping or cracks, backing pads
for cracks and excessive wear. After each
fall, check the machine and accessories for
damage or fit undamaged accessories. After
checking and installing accessories, position
yourself and bystanders outside the rotation
plane of the tool attachment and let the ma-
chine run at maximum speed for one minute.
Damaged accessories usually break during this
test period.
h.) Wear personal protective equipment. Use pro-
tective shield or safety goggles, depending on
the application. If appropriate, wear respirato-
ry protection mask, hearing protection, safety
gloves and a work apron, suitable as impact
protection against small sanding or workpiece
parts. The safety goggles must be suitable for
stopping flying debris generated by different types
of work. The respiratory protection mask or res-
pirator must be suitable for filtering the particles
generated by your work. Long-term exposure to
high levels of noise can lead to hearing loss.
i.)
Keep persons standing next to it at a safe
distance from the work area. Everyone in
the work area must wear personal protective
equipment. Parts of the workpiece or broken ac-
cessories can fly off and cause injuries outside the
immediate workplace.
j.)
When performing work during which the cut-
ting tool can meet with concealed power lines
or its own device mains cable, only hold the
device by the insulated gripping surfaces.
Contact with a live cable will also energise the
metal device parts of the electrical tool and will
lead to an electric shock.
k.) Keep the power cable away from rotating
parts. If you lose control, the power cable could
be cut or get caught and your hand or arm could
be pulled into the rotating parts.
l.)
Never put the machine down until the tool at-
tachment has come to a complete stop. Rotat-
ing tool attachments can hook into the support sur-
face and snatch the machine out of your control.
m.) Do not let the machine run while you are carry-
ing it by your side. In the event of accidental con-
tact, the rotating tool attachment can get caught
in your clothing, causing the tool attachment to
seriously cut you.

n.) Clean the ventilation slots of your machine
regularly. The cooling air fan draws dust into the
machine housing and excessive build-up of metal
dust can cause electrical hazards.
o.) Do not operate the machine near flammable
substances. Sparks could ignite these substances.
p.) Do not use tool attachments that require liquid
cooling. Water or other liquid coolants can cause
(fatal) electric shocks.
Cause and prevention of kick-backs
A kick-back is a sudden reaction to a jamming or
hooking of a rotating washer, support disc, brush or
other accessory. Jamming or hooking causes the ro-
tating accessory to stop very quickly, causing an un-
controlled machine to accelerate around the jamming
point against the direction of rotation of the accessory
as a counter-reaction. For example, if a grinding disc is
clamped or snagged by the workpiece, the circumfer-
ence of the disc can dig into the workpiece surface at
the clamping point and cause the disc to climb out or
be knocked out. The washer can either jump towards
or away from the user, depending on the direction of
rotation of the washer at the clamping point. Grinding
discs can also break in the process.
A kick-back is the result of misuse of the machine and/
or incorrect working method or operation, and can be
avoided by proper observance of the following precau-
tionary measures.
a.) Always hold the machine firmly and position
your body and arms so that you can control
the forces of a kick-back. For optimum control
of kick-back or reaction moments during start-up,
always use the additional handle, if supplied. The
user can control reaction moments or kick-back
forces if appropriate precautionary measures are
taken.
b.) Never place your hand near rotating tool at-
tachments. Tool attachments may kick back over
your hand.
c.) Do not place your body in the area where the
machine will move in the event of a kick-back.
A kick-back will accelerate the machine against
the direction of rotation of the washer at the clamp-
ing point.
d.) Be especially careful when working in corners,
on sharp edges, etc. Prevent the tool attachment
from bouncing back and catching. Corners, sharp
edges or kick-backs tend to hook the rotating tool
attachment, causing loss of control or kickback.
