The following two sections describe how to connect the Surrounder (not Surrounder Pro)
to a Dolby ProLogic decoder and to 5.1 format decoders (Dolby Digital (AC-3), MPEG-2
Audio, DTS).
DOLBY SURROUND PROLOGIC
Dolby Surround ProLogic creates two additional channels from an encoded analogue stereo
signal: the centre channel and the surround channel. The centre channel provides the
acoustic middle between the two front speaker, even if the listening position is not exactly
in the middle between the left and right front speaker. The surround channel provides mono
signals in the 100 to 7,000 Hz frequency range for the rear speakers. With the rear speakers,
the impression of three-dimensional sound is created.
• Use one of the adaptor cables
sockets (RCA) labelled "Front" on the decoder.
• Use the other of the adaptor cables
sockets (RCA) labelled "Rear" on the decoder.
• Deactivate the decoder's centre channel (Phantom mode, see corresponding section in
the operating manual of the decoder).
• If a delay time for surround systems can be set on the decoder: Set the delay time to
15 milliseconds.
Connection to a Dolby ProLogic decoder
DOLBY DIGITAL (AC-3), MPEG-2 AUDIO, DTS
In Dolby Digital (AC-3), an AC-3 decoder creates six separate channels from a digital data
stream. Digital signals are available on DVDs, laser discs etc. The two rear speakers are fed
different audio signals in the 20 to 20,000 Hz frequency range. An additional subwoofer
channel ensures the reproduction of low-frequency sounds. This is necessary, if the other
speakers are not able to reproduce signals in the lower frequency range.
