REASONS FOR OVERHEATING
1. Non-recommended anti-freeze. Low boiling point anti-freeze with a high temperature thermostat.
2. Defective radiator. Radiator overflow overfilled. Water passage in radiator core is clogged. Engine water
jackets.
3. Obstructed hoses or loose connections. Can be caused by interior deterioration.
4. Defective water pump.
5. Defective or missing fan blades.
6. Defective pressure cap.
7. Radiator core air passages clogged by debris. (May be cleared with a garden hose or air pressure).
8. Coolant leak. Defective thermostat.
9. Broken, loose, or missing fan belt.
10. Low oil level or wrong grade of oil.
11. Faulty ignition or engine improperly timed.
12. Distributor or automatic vacuum control not operating properly.
13. Damaged head gasket. Loose head bolts. Defective or cracked engine block or cylinder head.
14. Frequent starts and stops in heavy traffic, excessive idling, high speeds on hot days, heavy loads,
dragging brakes. All the above are emphasized at higher altitudes.
THE DIFFERENT PRESSURE CAPS
THE SWIVEL TYPE
The swivel type radiator cap is the replacement cap to the conventional round shell radiator cap. This type of
cap is easier to install and remove and can be used in open and closed systems alike.
THE MINI TYPE
This is a smaller version of the basic pressure cap and replaces the standard 13 or 16 lbs. pressure cap in cars
with smaller hoods (typically small cars with smaller radiators and plastic radiator tanks).
THE THREADED TYPE
These threaded plastic radiator caps were engineered for cars with pressurized overflow bottles. The sys-
tems are checked from the surge bottle neck instead of from the radiator. Since these bottles are made of
