Adjusting the blade tension (fig. D1)
The correct tension depends on the width of the blade used. Finer blades
require more tension than thicker blades.
• Move the blade tensioner (13) to the left to increase the blade tension.
The correct setting is a matter of experience.
Release the blade tension when not using your scroll saw for
an extended period.
Material hold-down (fig. E)
The material hold-down (9) must contact the surface of the workpiece.
• Loosen the screw (20) and move the rod (21) up or down.
• For bevel cuts, loosen the Allen screw (22) and bevel the material
hold-down until it is parallel to the table top.
• Tighten the material hold-down.
Never exceed the maximum cutting height. Never remove the
material hold-down.
Adjusting the air hose (fig. E)
Your DW788 is equipped with a flexible air hose (12) to keep the
workpiece free from sawdust.
• Position the air hose in such a way that the dust blows away from
the operator.
Setting the bevel angle (fig. F)
The table can be bevelled to the left or right (max. position 45°) and has a
preset position at 0°.
• Loosen the bevel lock knob (7).
• Tilt the table to the required angle and lock the knob. The angle is
indicated on the bevel scale (6).
Setting the electronic speed control dial (fig. G)
The speed is infinitely variable from 400 to 1,750 strokes per minute using
the electronic speed control dial (2) for uniform cutting results in all types
of materials.
• Turn the electronic speed control dial to the required level. The correct
setting, however, is a matter of experience. Generally, use the low
setting for hard and thin materials.
Consult your dealer for further information on the appropriate accessories.
These include various saw blades, a light (DE7881) and a legstand (DE7880).
Instructions for use
• Always observe the safety instructions and applicable
regulations.
• Install the appropriate saw blade. Do not use excessively worn
blades. The maximum rotation speed of the tool must not
exceed that of the saw blade.
• Do not attempt to cut excessively small pieces.
• Allow the blade to cut freely. Do not force.
• Allow the motor to reach full speed before cutting.
• Make sure all locking knobs and clamp handles are tight.
• Do not overtension the blade.
The attention of UK users is drawn to the "woodworking machines
regulations 1974" and any subsequent amendments.
Switching ON and OFF (fig. A & G)
• Select the appropriate speed.
• To switch the saw ON, press the front part of the ON/OFF-switch (1).
The tool now works in continuous operation (fig. G).
• To switch the saw OFF, press the rear part of the ON/OFF-switch (1).
• To lock the saw OFF, insert a padlock into the hole (23).

The ON/OFF-switch of your DW788 is equipped with a motor overload
protection fuse.
Sawing
• Set the table to the required angle.
• Do not attempt to cut curves smaller than the blade will allow.
• Slowly feed the workpiece into the blade, keeping it firmly pressed onto
the table. Allow the teeth to cut and do not force the workpiece
through the blade. The blade speed should be kept constant.
• Be doubly careful when close to the blade.
Always switch OFF the tool when work is finished and before unplugging.
Cutting plastics
• Always work at reduced speed. Carry out a test cut to check whether
the material is sensitive to heat.
Inside cuts (fig. D2 & H)
Your scroll saw is particularly useful for inside cuts for delicate work.
• Drill a pilot hole (24) in your workpiece (fig. H).
• Loosen the blade tension.
• Loosen the blade clamp screw (11).
• Lift the scroll saw by the upper arm (3) and pass the saw blade through
the pilot hole (24).
• Reattach the saw blade and tighten the blade clamp screw (11).
• Readjust the blade tension.
• Alternatively, loosen the blade clamp screw (18) and insert the blade
through the top of the workpiece (fig. D2).
Never lift the saw by the blade holder bracket (25).
• Whenever possible, connect a dust extraction device designed in
accordance with the relevant regulations regarding dust emission.
Maintenance
Your D WALT Power Tool has been designed to operate over a long

Lubrication
Your Power Tool requires no additional lubrication.
Cleaning
Keep the ventilation slots clear and regularly clean the housing with a
soft cloth.
