i
The "smoke-free" air should be released from the
system being tested whenever possible in order to
quickly fill the system with smoke.
i
The longer the smoke escapes from the location
where leakage exists, the greater is the amount of
fluorescent dye deposited at such leakage locations.
!
Remove the smoke supply hose and the battery
connection cable from the vehicle after the leakage
testing.
6.6
Examples of searching for leakage
The SMT 300 can be used in almost all low-pressure
vehicle systems where leakage is suspected, e. g.
evaporative emission control systems (EVAP), intake/
induction systems, charge-air coolers and turbocharger
systems, vacuum systems, exhaust systems and wind/
water leakage. The SMT 300 can also be used to check
solenoid valve operation and test components prior to
installation.
i
The illustrations for the examples of searching for
leakage described in the following can be found on
the next to last page of these operating instructions.

6.6.1
Wind and water leaks
1. Set the air-conditioning system in the vehicle to
"fresh air".
2. Set the blower to the maximum speed.
i
Setting the blower to the maximum speed ensures a
positive pressure in the passenger compartment.
3. Connect the smoke supply hose of the SMT 300 to
the smoke diffuser.
4. Allow smoke to flow along the seals/gaskets.
5. Watch for swirling smoke (also see fig. E and fig. F).
6.6.2
UV deposits
When working with UltraTraceUV®
smoke solution and UV light, always
wear nitrile rubber protective gloves
and safety goggles.
i
The patented smoke vapor contains a special,
non-contaminating, fluorescent UV dye that is de-
posited at the exact location of leakage.
Use the multi-function lamp (UV light setting) to
detect the dye.
i
This technology was developed such that dye is de-
posited only where there is a pressure difference. As
a result, the dye is deposited only where the smoke
escapes and leakage exists, but not during the wind
and water test.
i
The longer the smoke escapes from the location
where leakage exists, the greater is the amount of
fluorescent dye deposited.
