Installation
For the main dimensions see the drawing on page 29.
General
The quality of installation determines the reliability of the anchor
windlass. Almost all faults which arise can be traced to faulty or
imprecise installation. It is therefore of the greatest importance
that the points given in this manual are followed and checked
precisely.
Fitting
The following must be taken into account when choosing the
position for installing the anchor windlass:
- Set up the windlass so that when hauling up the anchor the
anchor wheel (G) will have the same direction of rotation as
shown in the drawing.
- The gipsy must be in line with the hawse pipe or the bow
roller.
- The chain must run out horizontally or lower than horizontally
to the hawse pipe or bow roller.
N.B. The angle of contact of the chain on the gipsy must be
at least 90û, also in the case of a hinged bow roller.
If necessary support the anchor windlass on a (wooden) sup-
port in order to satisfy the above requirements.
- If the deck is rounded this must also be filled up with a
(wooden) board.
Use the drilling stencil to mark the positions of the following
drill holes.
- the fixing holes for the anchor windlass.
- the hole for the chain to go through to the chain box.
- a hole for the connection cables to the electric motor.
- the correct place for the chain lead through (S).
The chain lead through (with chain finger) must be fitted using
3 M8 bolts, nuts and rings.
Make sure that the chain finger does not touch the gipsy.
Put sealer on the flange of the chain lead through and fit the
chain lead through in the deck.
Put sealer between the bottom of the anchor windlass and the
deck and fit the anchor windlass using 4 M10 bolts, nuts and
rings.
It is recommended that the bolts are greased with e.g. Loctite©
Anti Seize or Molykote© 1000.

The anchor windlass is already filled with oil. The oil level should
be halfway up the gauge (L).
If necessary oil can be added. To do this remove the filler cap
(F) and pour in the oil.
Do not drill any holes in the housing of the anchor windlass for
e.g. a switch or plug. This will damage the protective (anodised)
layer.
Chain box
A chain box of sufficient size must be provided.
Guidelines for determining the size of the chain box:
10 mm chain

Secure the end of the chain in the chain box.
Electrical installation
Check that the voltage given on the motor type plate is the
same as the voltage on board.
Battery
Use a starter battery with capacity of ca. 100 Ah - 12 V.
(e.g. VETUS maintenance free ship's battery 108 Ah)
For 24 V, 2 starter batteries of ca. 50 Ah - 12 V connected in
series.
(e.g. 2 VETUS maintenance free ship's batteries 55 Ah)
Position the batter(y)(ies) as close as possible to the anchor
windlass; the main cables can then be short so that there will
be little voltage drop.
The place for the batter(y)(ies) must be dry and well ventilated.
Main cables
The minimum cross-section is 35 mm
For 24 V minimum 10 mm

The voltage drop between battery and anchor windlass may not
be more than 5% of the initial voltage.
Consult the table on page 27 to select a suitable wire cross-sec-
tion if the total cable length (positive + and negative - cables
together) is more than 3 metres.
If necessary use wire with cross-section 35 mm

. (for 24 V) for the last piece of cable between the motor
and the magnetic switch.
There must be a main switch and a fuse incorporated in the
positive (+) cable.
A VETUS battery switch is very suitable here.
The fuse protects the anchor windlass against overloading and
at the same time the on board circuit from short-circuiting.
A VETUS 'slow' fuse is recommended.
- 12 V anchor windlass: 160 A,
- 24 V anchor windlass: 63 A,
