Examine the workpiece for foreign objects. Never
attempt to cut nails or other metal objects.
When sawing, always lead the cable away from
the machine to the rear (Fig. 6).
Match the feed rate to the thickness of the work-
piece when sawing. Excessive feedrates over-
load the motor, lead to poorly executed cuts,
and blunt the saw blade prematurely.
Keep your hands away from the front and under-
side of the workpiece when sawing (risk of injury).
No attempt must be made to slow down the saw
blade by applying lateral pressure to the surface.
Do not remove the machine from the workpiece
until the saw blade is stationary.
Always keep your hands well away from the
chip ejection area or the saw blade while the
machine is running.
Only use saw blades with the technical data
stated in this manual.
Do not use:
Cracked and deformed saw blades.
Blunt saw blades, as they may snap off the
saw blade wheel.
Saw blades with a thickness larger than
0.65 mm (1/32 in.).
The sawdust created by cutting makes it difficult
to see as clearly as may be necessary and can
be damaging to health in certain circumstances.
If not working outdoors or on well ventilated
premises, the machine must be connected to an
extractor unit, such as a small portable dust
extractor, when operating for long periods. The
air velocity must be at least 20 m/s (65.6 ft/sec.).
Instructions on service and maintenance:
Regular cleaning of the machine, especially the
tensioning device of the band saw blade and the
band saw wheels, is an important safety factor.
Before beginning this task, pull out the mains plug.
Only original MAFELL spare parts, accessories
and special accessories must be used. Other-
wise the manufacturer does not offer any war-
ranty and does not acceptany liability.

Setting up / Adjusting
3.1
Mains connection
The portable band saw Z 5 Ec / Z 4 Ec has Class II
protective insulation (double-insulated).
Before starting up, make sure that the mains voltage
matches the voltage stated on the rating plate.
Direction of rotation
The saw blade driving wheel should turn clockwise
when you look at it from the front.
3.2
Dust extraction
When machining wood for a long period and when using
the machine industrially with materials that generate dust
which represents a health hazard, the portable band saw
must be connected to a suitable dust extractor unit.
German TRGS 553 «wood dust» requires the
use of tested extraction devices. When using
other equipment, industrial users must ascer-
tain any special requirements by consulting
the relevant liability insurance association.
The portable band saw will remain within the
technical guideline value for wood dust con-
centration (2 mg/m³) only if connected to a
tested extractor unit.
3.3
Saw blade selection
Besides requiring the use of a sharp saw blade, good
quality cuts depend primarily on the choice of the saw
blade type according to the material being cut.
The saw blades included in the delivery specification
are suitable for the following cuts:
Cuts in dry and hard wood; for narrow turns:
Z 5 Ec - Saw blade 1752 x 6 x 0.65; 6 teeth/inch
Z 4 Ec - Saw blade 1592 x 6 x 0.65; 6 teeth/inch
Cuts in wet and dry wood, for narrow turns:
Z 5 Ec - Saw blade 1752 x 6 x 0.65; 4 teeth/inch
Z 4 Ec - Saw blade 1592 x 6 x 0.65; 4 teeth/inch
Allround for wet and dry wood; turns and
straight rip and cross cuts:
Z 5 Ec - Saw blade 1752 x 8 x 0.65; 4 teeth/inch
Z 4 Ec - Saw blade 1592 x 8 x 0.65; 4 teeth/inch
3.4
Changing and adjusting saw blade
Pull out the mains plug before chang-
ing the saw blade.
Remove lower and upper saw blade guards 23/22
(Fig. 2) and remove the blade cover 145. Saw blade
in normal position. Loosen tension of saw blade by
turning the star-shaped handle 6 (Fig. 5) counter-
clockwise, until the saw blade can be removed. The
