3.10 Standard Pieces

3.10.1 Introduction

Standard pieces is a software option that will
automatically cut frequently used pieces. It even works
without optimizing or nesting. Examples of standard
pieces might include chords and webs for short jacks,
heel wedges and sliders, blocks for floor trusses, even
floor truss webs. The software places Standard Pieces
on the stock; they are shown in Figure 49 on the stock
layout.

3.10.2 How it works

Once pieces that are used frequently across cutting
operations have been identified, they can be set as
standard pieces. Doing so will add them to a list used
by the ALS 4.0 software. What makes this feature unique
is that it does not add lumber stock to the cutting jobs.
The standards pieces function simply places the set
pieces on any leftover lumber within the job. Using
standard pieces will make the best use of material
waste, so that the least amount of lumber is left unused.

3.10.3 Entering Standard Pieces

The Standard Piece List can have any cuts on it. The best
benefit will result when the set pieces are reasonably
short, as they will be placed on the remaining waste
in the job. Pieces can be added to the list by creating
them in Semi-Auto (Figure 21, Number 6), or they can be
selectively extracted from any job file and placed in the
stdpcs.trs file (as shown in section 3.10.4).
The standard pieces list can be prioritized by
importance as well as temporarily turned off. Priorities
can be changed at any time. Additionally, turning off the
standard pieces will not eliminate them from storage in
the stdpcs.trs file so they will remain available for use at
any time.
