Figs. 29 to 32 - checking the working systems
- Check that the sticks and trims on the transmitter are at
centre.
- Switch the transmitter on, and connect the flight battery
to switch the receiving system on.
- Check the neutral position of the control surfaces.
- Place the model on the floor and stand behind it. Move
the rudder stick to the right, and the rudder should also
deflect to the right.
- Move the aileron stick to the right and the right-hand
ailerons should rise, the left-hand ailerons fall.
- Pull the elevator stick back towards you, and the trailing
edge of the elevator should rise.
- If any function works the wrong way round, correct it
using the servo reverse facility for that channel on your
transmitter.
- The travels for all the control surfaces are stated as a sug-
gested range. For the first few flights you should use
values close to the bottom limit. When you become fami-
liar with the model and wish to exploit its full agility, enlar-
ge the travels towards the top limit.
- The control surface travels can be set to the stated values
using the servo travel adjustment facility at your transmit-
ter.
- Note: whenever you are working on the model, making
adjustments etc., keep well clear of the rotational plane
of the propeller - injury hazard. For the same reason
make sure that nobody else is standing in front of the
model when the motor is connected to the flight battery.
- Caution: adjust the throttle system so that the motor does
not run when the stick is at the idle end-point, as descri-
bed in the instructions supplied with the speed controller.
- Check the direction of rotation of the propeller: when vie-
wed from the front, the motor shaft should rotate anti-
clockwise, as shown in the photo. If this is not the case -
perhaps if you are using components other than those
recommended - you can reverse the motor by swapping
over any two of the three motor wires.

Light Thing
Test-flying, flying notes
- Please read the sections entitled "Routine pre-flight
checks" and "Flying the model" in the Safety Notes
before attempting to fly the model for the first time.
- The model is fast, and responds very directly to control
commands. For this reason we recommend that you set
45 to 65% Expo (exponential) on the flying controls -
especially on the ailerons.
- For your first few flights please wait for a day with no
more than a gentle breeze.
- A good flying site consists of a large, flat, open grassy
field, devoid of trees, fences, high-tension overhead
cables etc.
- Repeat the check of the working systems.
- The model can be taken off from the ground or hand-laun-
ched.
- If the model is to be hand-launched, ask an experienced
friend to do the honours for you. He should be capable of
giving the model a reasonably strong, flat launch.
- The model must be launched straight into any wind.
- With the motor running at full-throttle, give the aeroplane
a firm launch, directly into any breeze, with the fuselage
and wings level.
- Keep the Light Thing flying straight and level at first; don't
turn the model while it is still close to the ground
- Adjust the control surface trims if necessary, so that the
model flies straight with a reasonable rate of climb "hands
off".
- Check the model's response to control commands; you
may need to increase or reduce the control surface travels
after the first landing.
- Check the aeroplane's stalling speed at a safe height.
- Keep the model's speed well above the stall for the lan-
ding approach.

- The Light Thing can also be taken off like a full-size
machine. Take care to initiate the take-off run directly into
wind.
- Apply full up-elevator initially to prevent the model tipping
onto its nose. Apply full-throttle briskly, returning the ele-
vator to neutral as the model picks up speed. Lift off with
gentle application of up-elevator once the model reaches
flying speed. Take care not to stall the machine, and
adjust the trims immediately if necessary.
