Changing the Deck Belt
WARNING:Be sure to shut the engine
off,removeignition key,disconnect the
spark plug wire(s) and ground against
the engine to prevent unintended starting
before removing the belt.
All belton yourtractorare subjectto wearand shouldbe
replacedif any signsof wearare present.
IMPORTANT: T heV-beltfoundon yourtractorare
speciallydesignedto engageand disengagesafely.A
substitute(non-OEM)V-beltcan be dangerousby not
disengagingcompletely.Fora properworkingmachine,
usefactory approvedbelts.
Tochangeor replacethe deck belt on yourtractor,
proceedas follows:
1. Lowerthe deck by movingthe deck lift leverintothe
bottomnotchon the rightfender.
2. Removethe beltguardsby removingthe self-tapping
screwsthat fastenthem to the deck.

Removethe beltkeeperrodfrom aroundthe engine
pulley.
On the 42-inchdeck only, loosenbut do not remove,
the idler pulleynuts.This will enablethe belt to be
easily removed from the idler pulleys.See Fig. 6-7 on
the previouspage.

5. Removethedeck belt fromaroundall pulleys,including
the deck idler pulley.
6. Routethe newbelt as shownin and Fig.6-8, 6-9 or
6-10.
7. Remountthe beltguardsremovedearlier.
Changing the Lower Deck Belt (46" Decks)
NOTE:Severalcomponents mustbe removedin orderto
changethe tractor'slowerdeck belt. Seean authorized
MTDService Dealerto haveyourlowerdrivebelt replaced
or phoneCustomerSupportas instructedon page2 for
information on orderinga ServiceManual.
Changing the Transmission Drive Belt
NOTE:Severalcomponents mustbe removedand special
tools (i.e.air/impactwrench)in orderto changethe
