3.2 Optical Fiber
Maintain sufficient space for the fiber to avoid excessive bending radius, a circumference greater than 30mm
is recommended. The bend radius is the amount of bending that can occur before a cable can suffer damage
or increase attenuation and limit bandwidth performance. When a fiber cable is bent excessively, the optical
signal inside the cable can refract and leak through the fiber jacket. Bending can also permanently damage
the fiber by causing microcracks. The result is known as bend loss-a loss of signal strength that can com-
promise the integrity of data transmission.Note: Excessive pulling tension and overly tight fasteners can also
cause transmission problems and micro-cracks in fiber optic cables.
Caution:
To preserve and protect the contact surfaces of optical connectors, it is good practice to keep the protective
caps of ferules and sockets in place until connection or eventual cleaning using dedicated tools.
