UNHITCHING PROCEDURE
Unhitching Procedure
CAUTION:
Trailers that are not stable or properly hitched can fall and cause serious injury.
CAUTION:
Whenever possible, avoid placing your body under the trailer or between the truck and
trailer. If it becomes necessary to work between the truck and the trailer, follow the
guidelines outlined in the following step.
1. If it becomes necessary to work between the truck and the trailer use the following
guidelines for safety.
• Verify that the truck transmission is in park.
• Make sure the emergency brake is on.
• Place wheel chocks in front of and behind all trailer tires.
• Verify that the trailer landing gear are resting on firm ground.
2. Follow these guidelines before attempting to unhitch your trailer.
• All trailer tires MUST be blocked in front and behind each tire. Place wheel
chocks firmly against front and rear of each trailer wheel to prevent any
possible forward or rearward motion.
• Deploy the trailer jacks and/or landing gear to support the trailer. Refer to your
trailer's owner guide for additional information.
• The vehicle must be stationary, and in PARK, with the emergency brake ON.
3. Open the tailgate.
• Use the trailer jacks or landing gear to adjust the rear bumper or tailgate
height to within ±1 IN (±25.4mm) recorded during Hitching Procedure Step 7.
4. Disconnect the breakaway switch cable from the truck.
5. Disconnect the trailer electrical cable between the truck and trailer.
