• Attach the clamps to the battery poles and turn or move the clamps back and forth several
times to ensure a good connection. This helps to prevent the clamps from slipping off the poles
and reduces the risk of sparking.
5.4 CHARGING THE BATTERY INSIDE THE VEHICLE
Follow these steps if the battery is installed in a vehicle. A spark near the battery may cause the
battery to explode. To reduce the risk of sparking:
• Position all the cables so that they cannot be damaged by the bonnet, door or moving engine
components.
• Keep away from fan blades, belts, pulleys and other parts that may cause injury.
• Check the polarity of the battery poles. The battery's POSITIVE POLE (POSITIVE, P, +) usually
has a larger diameter than the NEGATIVE POLE (NEGATIVE, N, -).
• Determine which pole of the battery is earthed to the body (connected to the vehicle body).
• For vehicles earthed at the negative pole, connect the battery charger's POSITIVE CLAMP (RED)
to the battery's non-earthed POSITIVE POLE (POSITIVE, P, +).
• Connect the NEGATIVE CLAMP (BLACK) to the vehicle body or engine block at a point away
from the battery. Do not connect the clamp to the carburettor, fuel lines or housing plates.
Attach the clamp to a solid metal area of the frame or to the engine block.
• For vehicles earthed at the positive pole, connect the battery charger's NEGATIVE CLAMP
(BLACK) to the battery's non-earthed NEGATIVE POLE (NEGATIVE, N, -). Connect the POSITIVE
CLAMP (RED) to the vehicle body or engine block at a point away from the battery. Do not
connect the clamp to the carburettor, fuel lines or housing plates. Attach the clamp to a solid
metal area of the frame or to the engine block.
• To disconnect the charger, unplug the mains plug from the mains socket, remove the clamp
from the vehicle body and then remove the clamp from the battery pole.
5.5 BATTERY OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE
Follow these steps if the battery is outside of a vehicle. A spark near the battery can cause the
battery to explode. To reduce the risk of sparking:
• Check the polarity of the battery poles. The battery's POSITIVE POLE (POSITIVE, P, +) usually
has a larger diameter than the NEGATIVE POLE (NEGATIVE, N, -).
• Connect an insulated battery cable measuring min. 61 cm long and 6 AWG thick to the battery's
NEGATIVE POLE (NEGATIVE, N, -).
• Connect the charger's POSITIVE CLAMP (RED) to the battery's POSITIVE POLE (POSITIVE, P,
+).
• Keep yourself and the free end of the cable as far away from the battery as possible – then
connect the charger's NEGATIVE CLAMP (BLACK) to the free end of the cable.
• Do not turn towards the battery when making the final connection.
• When disconnecting the charger, always reverse the order of the connection process and stay
as far away from the battery as possible when disconnecting the first connection.
• A marine battery (boat battery) must be removed and charged on land. Charging on board
requires special equipment for marine use.
5.6 PRECAUTIONS FOR CONNECTING THE MAINS PLUG
• The mains plug must be plugged into a mains socket that has been correctly installed in
accordance with all local codes and regulations.
