The wax used in therapy must be white, odorless, tasteless and solid and is supplied in the form of plates.
Therapeutic effects are found with the application of heat:
To Increase connective tissue extensibility.
To decrease joint stiffness.
Analgesic effects
In subacute and chronic inflammatory processes. Example, rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis,
tendinitis and periarthritis escapulahumeral, because it provides a long antiinflammatory and
analgesic action.
Muscle relaxant effect.
In painful processes as sacrolumbalgias, back pain, cervical pain, sciatic pain, herniated discs,
etc..
Antispasmodic effects.
Anti-inflammatory effect.
The efficacy of thermotherapy applications is clinically documented to fight against muscle
spasms of defense, subacute and chronic traumatic events and other processes like sympathetic
dystrophy - reflects, Raynaud's disease, pelvic inflammatory disease, etc..
CONTRAINDICATIONS AND PRECAUTIONS
Disorders in the sentitivity.
Before applying, you must evaluate the thermal and pain sensitivity of the area as well as the patient's
circulatory status, because the heat is generally contraindicated or should be used with particular caution
on areas anesthetized or obtunded patient.
In most applications, dosimetry is not exact, and must be taken of the patient perceives discomfort or pain
when warming threshold was exceeded.
Severe circulatory disorders.
Heating of tissues with inadequate blood supply is contraindicated, as the temperature elevation increases
the metabolic demands, without associated vascular adaptations, with the risk of producing an ischemic
necrosis.
Circulatory disorders, especially arterial, can provide to a decrease in convective mechanism supplied
heat dissipation, with the risk of burning the tissues of the area. Altered vessels may have an increased
contractility and their response to intense thermal stimulus is essentially spasmodic.
Bleeding disorders.
Dont treat areas where there is a tendency to bleed, because the thermal stimulus produces an increase in
blood flow. This is the case in diseases such as hemophilia, in post-traumatic states or in patients
undergoing long-term steroid therapy, in which there is a tendency to capillary fragility.
Malignant neoplas.
Except for special treatment (hyperthermia anticancer), thermotherapy is contraindicated in areas where
malignancy is localized, as subtherapeutic temperatures, as used in physiotherapy, can increase the rate of
tumor growth. There are many studies showing that thermotherapy applications may increase the
development of metastases.
Pregnant.
