The VAM 5A water separator is constructed on the
centrifugal principle. The incoming air is forced
via the tangential positioning of the inlet into a
rotary movement so that the water particles are
propelled against the walls of the container vessel
(1) and separated from the air.
The water collects at the bottom of the vessel
where it is automatically emptied via an automatic
bleed valve (4) when the air pressure falls below
0.2 bar, that is when the air supply is shut off. When
pressure is again applied to the separator, the valve
shuts automatically as soon as the pressure rises
above 0.5 bar. ln order to prevent solid particles in
the compressed air from damaging the bleed valve,
the latter is fitted with a strainer (3).
Near the bottom of the water separator there is
a separator plate (2), the purpose of which is to
prevent the through-flow of air from sucking up the
previously separated water at the bottom of the
separator.
The inlet (7) and outlet (8) pipes are radially
mounted opposite each other. The inlet pipe is
placed somewhat lower and offset from the centre
line of the separator. The outlet pipe is placed
radially, slightly higher than the inlet pipe and
facing the opposite direction to the inlet pipe.
An arrow marked on the leg support (6) of the
separator indicates the direction of the air flow.

Installation
A water separator can only handle water in its
liquid state and should therefore be placed at that
part of the pressure line where the greatest amount
of water is precipitated, i.e. as far away from the
compressor as practicably possible and connected
to an intermediary lubricating device.
However at low outdoor temperatures the
separator should not be placed too far from the
compressor. This is to ensure that the temperature
of the compressed air is several degrees above
0°C and to prevent internal icing.
The separator can be connected to air lines up to
31.5 mm in diameter.
NOTE! Make sure that the separator is properly
connected as regards the direction of flow. See the
arrows marked on the leg support of the separator.

Maintenance instructions

The automatic bleed valve should not be removed
when the vessel is under pressure.
Since the automatic bleed valve only releases
water in a pressureless state it is essential that the
separator is occasionally vented. The more humid
the atmospheric air the more frequently it must be
vented.
After a certain period of operation the function of
the automatic bleed valve may become impaired
through impurities clogging the strainer. This may
be remedied by removing the automatic valve and
either cleaning or replacing the strainer.
