S4 EXPLORER X-ray Spectrometer
Introduction
Safety System
The spectrometer S4 EXPLORER has two safety circuits which are totally independent and fully im-
plemented in a symmetric way (see schematic C79298-A3248-A3-*-11). In case of an error, which
affects the X-ray radiation safety the two safety circuits will be interrupted and thus the X-ray radiation
will be switched-off instantly.
The two safety circuits control the two contactors (K52 and K53) which are located inside the X-Ray
Generator and enable the generation of high voltage. High voltage can only be generated if both
safety lines are closed, i.e. all components of the safety system signal that everything is OK.
Furthermore there is a control unit continually checking all safety relevant components. If it detects
any errors the X-ray generation unit will be turned off immediately.
X-Ray Safety Line 1:
Safety Circuit #1 consists of contactor K52 (activation of the high voltage generation) and relay K6
(auxiliary function), safety relays K1,K2 (control logic), safety switches S651, S653, S655, S657 (con-
trol of the side panels),switches S659 and S665 (control of the sample seal), switch S661 (control of
the sample seal motor), resistors R1 and R2 (detection of short circuits) as well the so-called pull-wire
(control of the cover of the sample entry position, control of the high voltage cable). If all these
switches are closed, ground potential will be transferred from the end of the pull-wire through all
switches to the X-ray generator. The ground potential will activate contactor K52 inside the X-ray
Generator and then turn on the generation of high voltage.
X-Ray Safety Line 2:
Safety Circuit #2 consists of contactor K53 (activation of the high voltage generation) and relay K7
(auxiliary function), safety relays K1,K2 (control logic), safety switches S652, S654, S656, S658 (con-
trol of the side panels),switches S660 and S664 (control of the sample seal), switch S662 (control of
the sample seal motor), resistors R3 and R4 (detection of short circuits) as well the so-called pull-wire
(control of the cover of the sample entry position, control of the high voltage cable). If all these
switches are closed, a potential of +24V will be transferred from the end of the pull-wire through all
switches to the X-ray generator. This potential will activate contactor K53 inside the X-ray Generator
and thus turn on the generation of high voltage.
