About this document
1.1
Documents for the MSI 400 System
This assembly instruction describes the assembly of the
unsafe extension module MSI-EM-IO84NP-xx to the safety
control MSI 400.
The assembly of other MSI 400 modules is described in a
separate instruction.
Mounting method, configuration and commissioning of the
safety control MSI 400 are described in the following
operating instructions:

1.2
Function of this document
This assembly instruction guides the technical personnel of
the machine manufacturer or machine operator in the safe
installation of the expansion modules of the modular safety
control MSI 400.
These assembly instructions do not provide instructions for
operating the machine in which the safety control is or will be
integrated. The operating instructions of the machine
contains information on this subject.
2
Safety
This section is intended to support your safety and the safety
of the system users.
Please read this section carefully before you start the
assembly.
2.1
Qualified persons
The modular safety control MSI 400 must only be assembled
by capable persons.
Qualified persons are those who...
have suitable technical training and
have been trained by the machine operator in the operation
and applicable safety guidelines and
have access to the MSI 400 operating instructions and have
read said instructions and have duly noted these and
have access to the operating instructions for the safety
devices connected to the safety control and have read them
and duly noted them.
2.2
Applications
The modular safety control MSI 400 is a programmable
control system for safety applications. It can be used
as per EN 61508 up to SIL 3
as per EN 62061 up to SIL CL 3
as per EN ISO 13849-1:2015 up to Performance Level
(PL) e
as per EN ISO 13849-1 up to Category 4
The level of safety actually achieved depends on the external
wiring, the implementation of the wiring, the parameterization,
the selection of the command encoder, and the modules and
their arrangement on the machine.
Opto-electronic and tactile safety sensors (e. g. light curtains,
laser scanners, safety switches, sensors, emergency stop
switches) are connected and logically linked with the modular
safety control.
The corresponding actuators on the machine or systems can
be securely switched off via the safety-related outputs of the
safety control.

2.3
Intended use
The modular safety control MSI 400 must only be used within
specific operating limits (voltage, temperature etc., see
Section 6 "Technical data). It must only be used by expert
personnel and only on the machine where it has been
installed and initially commissioned by a capable person in
accordance with the MSI 400 operating instructions.
In the case of any other use or modifications of the device -
including those made for the purpose of mounting and
installation - all warranty claims against the manufacturer
become void.
2.4
General safety information and protective measures
CAUTION
CAUTION
Observe during the installation, mounting method, instead
of: Installation and application of the safety control system
MSI 400 the standards and guidelines valid in your country.
The national/international legal regulations apply to the
installation and use of the MSI 400 safety control as well as
for the commissioning and recurring technical testing,
particularly the following
– EMC Directive 2014/30/EU
– Machinery Directive 2006/42/EG
– Work Equipment Directive 2009/104/EC
– Low-Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU
– Elevators Directive 2014/33/EU
– The accident prevention regulations/safety rules
Manufacturers and operators of a machine on which a MSI
400 safety control is being used are responsible for
coordinating with the proper authorities with regard to
applicable safety guidelines/rules and complying with these.
The information in these assembly instructions must be
followed without fail.
The tests must be conducted by qualified persons or by
those who are personally authorized and commissioned to
do so and must always be fully documented at all times by
a third-party.
The external power supply of the devices must be able to
bridge a short-term power outage of 20 ms in accordance
with EN 60204. Appropriate PELV and SELV compatible
power supply units are available as accessories from Leuze
electronic.
The modules of the MSI 400 system correspond to class A,
Group 1, in accordance with EN 55011.
– Group 1 includes all ISM devices in which intentionally
generated and/or used wired HF power, which is required
for the internal function of the device itself, occurs.

Note the safety information and protective
measures!
Note the following points in order to ensure
intended use of the MSI 400 safety control.
Use of the inputs/outputs IY5...IY8
When using the combination connection as an
input, the signal input voltage at IY5...IY8 must
never be greater than the supply voltage at
A1/A2.
The MSI 400 system meets the basic
requirement of Class A (industrial applications)
according to the generic technical standard
"Emitted Interference!"
The MSI 400 system is therefore only suitable
for use in an industrial environment and not in
private areas.
