5. If the signal is not strong enough, connect the black test lead to
earth ground. This will increase the radiated signal allowing the
amplifier probe to detect the tone at a greater distance.
6. When trying to pinpoint a cable in a distribution panel or wiring
closet, refer to Tracing a Pair in the manual.
NOTE:
The 3.5mm earphone jack accepts standard stereo headphones.
The speaker will shut off when the headphone is plugged in. In order to avoid
excessive noise, turn the volume control down before using the headphones.
Adjust the volume to a comfortable level when in use.
NOTE:
Will not tone through active network equipment such as routers
and switches.

Tracing a Pair
This method allows the user to identify a specific pair within
a multi-pair cable.
WARNING:
Never connect to AC voltage. Do not connect to DC voltage
in excess of 60 volts. Do not touch the metal test lead tips when making a
connection. Never allow the amplifier probe to contact voltage sources,
such as wiring to an electrical outlet.
NOTE:
Use caution when tracing installed cables. The tone generator may
cause interference with signals on adjacent conductors.
Black
1. Set the TONE/CONT switch to the TONE position.
2. Connect the red test lead to one wire and connect the black test
lead to the other wire on the pair being traced.
Press the TEST button to select the desired tone.
3. At the other end of the cable, the tone will be loudest when the
tip of the amplifier probe is touching the pair that is connected
to the tone generator.
4. To confirm identification, separate the wires on the pair by a
few inches. The tone should be much louder when the probe tip
is touching either wire on the separated pair.
