Saw band teeth side-set
The width of side-set should be 0,15 - 0,3 mm each
side, depending on the blade thickness, type and
moisture contents of the wood, and must not exceed
half of the saw band width even when cutting wet wood.
Only the upper third of the tooth height should be side-
set, absolute maximum is upper half of the tooth height.
If the side set reaches down too much, the teeth are
stressed excessively at their roots from flexing of the
saw band, abnormal strain appears, the teeth roots
become weakest points of the saw band, and cracks
occurs at the roots of the teeth.
Sharpening of the saw bands
Care is to be taken when filing the saw bands manually
that edges of the file are sufficiently rounded, because
files with sharp edges contribute to formation of cracks.
When grinding machines are used for sharpening, care
must be also taken that the roots of teeth get a good
radius. Make sure that too much material is not taken
off at once, otherwise the tooth tips overheat and
become brittle. Coarse grinding wheels must not be
used, as they create rough surface giving rise to
concentration of stress and crack formation therefore.
Maintenance and care
The portable band saw requires practically no
maintenance. The saw requires no additional
lubrication. It is advisable to remove accumulated
sawdust and chips regularly.
