APPENDIX A
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How does the Reflux Band work?
The upper esophageal sphincter, or UES, is a muscle at the top of your esophagus that opens when you swallow and
otherwise remains closed to prevent stomach contents from coming back up into your throat and lungs. A weak or
compromised UES has trouble staying closed so acid reflux enters the throat. The Reflux Band is worn while sleeping
and applies slight external pressure to help the UES remain closed.
Who should NOT use the Reflux Band?
DO NOT USE THE REFLUX BAND IF YOU HAVE A CARDIAC PACEMAKER, IMPLANTED DEFIBRILLATOR, OR
OTHER IMPLANTED METALLIC OR ELECTRONIC DEVICES. Such use could cause programming of these devices
to be altered or shut off, electric shock, burns, electrical interference or death.
Who should use the Reflux Band?
The Reflux Band is for people that are 18 years of age and older who suffer from reflux symptoms into the throat and
lungs such as nighttime regurgitation, feeling of throatburn and irritation, constant cough or throat clearing, hoarse
voice, difficulty swallowing, postnasal drip and reflux-induced sleep disruption. Sometimes reflux can make other
conditions worse such as pneumonia, bronchitis, asthma, sinusitis and COPD.
How will the Reflux Band feel?
Wearing the Reflux Band feels familiar, like wearing a buttoned shirt collar. The amount of pressure applied is similar to
taking your pulse. Your breathing and swallowing remain normal.
