Installation and commissioning
1. O n unpacking, and again prior to installation, check the
electrode visually for signs of mechanical damage to the
glass membrane, the shaft and the connector. Report
any faults or defects immediately to your authorized
METTLER TOLEDO dealer.
2. Remove the watering cap and rinse the electrode with
distilled or deionized water. Use only soft tissue to dab
the electrode dry. Do not rub the glass membrane since
this can lead to sluggish response behavior of the
electrode.
3. Electrodes with a dry glass membrane must be
conditioned for several hours in a 3 mol KCl solution
before being used.
4. Connect always the solution ground (blue cable) to the
transmitter.
5. Use PTFE tape to seal the NPT thread.
6. If possible use the protection sleeve (order no.
52 401 808).

Cabling
The InPro 4550 VP is equipped with a VarioPin connector.
To connect the cable to the electrode, attach and gently
rotate until the connector is engaged (groove). Screw the
cable cap nut onto the electrode until the connection is
secure. The plug assembly should be fitted hand-tight
only; no tools should be used. For details of the exact
assignment of the individual cable leads to the VP pins,
please refer to the instruction leaflet "Preparation of the
cable for connection to the transmitter" supplied together
with the cable.

Calibration and measurement
InPro 4550 VP electrodes require two-point calibration.
Before calibration, the watering cap must be removed
from the pH electrode. The electrode is then dipped
successively into two different buffer solutions, each of
known pH value, and the transmitter calibrated to these
buffer values (for example, buffers pH 4.01 and pH 7.00).
Please note the instructions given in the operating manual
of the transmitter. Calibration should be repeated as and
when needed.

Maintenance
– E lectrodes with Xerolyt Plus polymer electrolyte cannot
be refilled.
– E lectrodes should not be stored dry for any period of
time.
– D uring storage, the watering cap should be in place,
filled with Friscolyt™ or 3 mol KCl solution.
– N ever store an electrode in distilled or deionized water,
as this shortens the lifetime of the electrode.
– S hould the electrode dry out, it must be conditioned for
24 hours in Friscolyt (ordering no. 51 340 053 for 250
ml, or 51 340 054 for 6 3 250 ml) before reuse. After
conditioning, recalibration is required.
– A fter each workcycle, the tip of the electrode should be
cleaned using deionized water.
