Performing a Test
Testing by healthcare professionals
WARNING
Follow the infection control procedures of your institution when handling blood testing
■
equipment.
Wear gloves. Change gloves between patients, even if patient dedicated testing devices
■
and single-use, self-disabling lancing devices are used.
If used for testing multiple patients, the Accutrend Plus meter must be properly cleaned
■
and disinfected after every patient following the guidelines provided in this manual (see
section Cleaning starting on page 71).
The gloves worn during cleaning /disinfection should be removed and hands washed
■
thoroughly with soap and water before performing the next patient test.
Use an auto-disabling single-use lancing device for each patient. The lancing device
■
must be intended for use by healthcare professionals in a multiple patient setting (for
example, the Accu-Chek Safe-T-Pro Plus lancing device from Roche). Follow the manu-
facturer's instructions for use.
Use capillary pipettes to apply blood outside the meter when performing a test on multiple
■
patients if the test is suitable for the use of capillary pipettes (see test specific package
insert).
If using capillary pipettes, avoid damaging the sample application area with the edge of
■
the pipette during sample application.

Potential risk of infection
Healthcare professionals using the Accutrend Plus meter to perform tests
in more than one patient must be aware that any object coming into contact
with human blood is a potential source of infection. Healthcare profession-
als must also be aware that any cross-contamination is a potential source
of infection for patients. (See: Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute:
Protection of Laboratory Workers from Occupationally Acquired Infections;
Approved Guideline - Third Edition; CLSI document M29-A3, 2005).
Any patient with an infection or suffering from an infectious disease and
any patient who is a carrier of a multiresistant organism must be assigned
his/her own meter. This applies also if a patient is suspected of being one
of the above and, for as long as the suspicion exists, the meter must not
be used to test any other patient.
