OPERATION
VEHICLE PREPARATION
1. Raise and support the vehicle, and be sure other wheels are chocked.
2. Remove the front wheel and tire, axle nut, and outer tie rod nut.
3. Disconnect the tie rod and remove the front brake caliper.
4. Use a caliper hanger to secure the caliper out of the way, be sure not to kink the brake hose.
5. Next remove the brake rotor and inspect the condition. Have it turned or replaced if out of spec.
6. Remove the axle from the hub and hang it out of the way securely. It must not hang unsupported.
Note: On some models, it is necessary to loosen the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle. This
prevents damage to the transaxle when removing the axle from the hub.
7. Reinstall the ball joint (if removed).
BEARING REMOVAL
Note: These instructions are intended to illustrate the process used on
FWD bearings, and not be specific to any one vehicle. Each vehicle will
take a different combination of adapters and tubes necessary for safe
and effective removal and installation. Select tubes deep enough to
allow the bearing to be completely removed from the spindle. Carefully
select an installer adapter that contacts the body of the bearing.
1. Following the "Vehicle Preparation" instructions above should
have cleared the way to access the bearing on both sides of the
spindle. If not, remove any parts that are still obstructing access.
2. Remove the C clip and seal from the outboard side of the knuckle
assembly, if so equipped. The bearing will be pressed from the
inboard side through to the outboard side.
3. Select the appropriate sleeve so it seats properly on the outboard
side, image #1. The bearing must clear as it gets pressed through.
4. Select the adapter plate that is the same size as the shoulder of the
bearing. Be sure it only rests on the body and will not contact anything
as it passes through the bore of the knuckle. Hold it in place.
5. Place the forcing screw through the washer and through the
adapter plate and knuckle, image #2.
