7 . Electrical connection

Install wiring harness (r) in the boot lid (2) in
accordance with the above illustration and secure
it with cables ties (r1).

Then draw the wiring harness (r) through the
hose (1) and lay it into the boot.
Only vehicles without check control module
The wiring harness (r) for the third brake light
consists of two cables. One of the leads is entirely
brown (minus) and the other blue with red strands
(plus).

Lay the wiring harness (r) further as far as the left
rear light unit. Then pull out the central plug
connector (1) of the left rear light unit. Press out
the brown ground cable from plug-in place 1 and
cut off the socket contact. Cut off approx. 100 mm
of both cables of the wiring harness (r). Connect
the brown supplementary cable (2) to the ground
cable of the vehicle. Crimp on socket contact (t)
and insert it once more in plug-in place 1 of the
central plug-in connector (1).
Press out blue-red cable from plug-in place 7.
Cut off socket contact and connect it to blue-red
supplementary cable (3).
Crimp on socket contact (t) and insert it once more in
plug-in place 7 of the central plug-in connector (1).
Provide each end of the supplementary cables
(2 and 3) with socket contacts (t) and socket
housings (v). Crimp on a pin contact (u) to each
end of the wiring harness (r) and provide them with
pin housings (w). Connect supplementary cables
(2 and 3) with cables (3 and 4) of the wiring
harness (r).
Only connect together cables of the same
colour.
Only vehicles with check control module
The wiring harness (r) of the third brake light
consists of two cables. One of the leads is entirely
brown (minus) and the other blue with red strands
(plus).

Install the supplied wiring harness (s) with terminal
lug and socket contact forwards starting from the
boot. Crimp the supplied pin contacts (u) on to the
wiring harness (r) of the rear wing. Now insert the
cable (blue with red strands) of the wiring
harness (r) into the supplied plug housing (x) at
plug-in place 2 and insert the cable (brown) of the
wiring harness (r) at plug-in place 1.
Now connect connector (x) with connector (1) of
the supplementary wiring harness (s).

Push terminal lug (1) of the supplementary wiring
harness (s) on to ground post (2) and secure with
nut (3). Install the residual supplementary wiring
harness along the sill in the direction of the
instrument panel (check control module).

Install supplementary wiring harness (s) up to the
check control module (under the steering column).
Undo black connector (1) of the check control
module and insert socket contact (2) in plug-in
place 14.
In vehicles with standard or retrofitted third
brake light, plug-in place 14 is assigned. In this
case, the cable is to be pulled out of plug-in
place 14 and replaced by socket contact (2) of the
supplementary wiring harness (s). Insulate pulled-
out cable and tie it back.
8. Making the existing third brake
light non-functional
Vehicles with existing third brake light must without
fail have these made non-functional otherwise the
type approval for your vehicle is extinguished.
Vehicles with check control module and
standard or retrofitted third BMW brake light
In these vehicles, pulling-out the existing cable
from plug-in place 14 (see illustration F 36 82 961)
automatically makes the third brake light non-
functional.
Vehicles without check control module and
standard or retrofitted third brake light

In these vehicles the bulb socket (1) on the side of
the boot is to be removed and stored outside the
vehicle.
Reassemble the vehicle in the reverse order of
disassembly.
