9.6 Control handle

VD00191
Use the drill template to drill the holes for fitting and cable
entrance at the place required at the helm position.
Fit the control handle with the gasket and two M6 nuts supplied.
Feed the connector cable through to the electric motor, insert
the plug and tighten the lock nut clockwise, see page 59.
If it is necessary to cut the intermediate cable and then recon-
nect it, make certain that the wires are connected colour to
colour.
Bundle any excess cable together and ensure that it does not
'hang' on the plug or chafe against moving parts.
N.B.: It is not possible to connect 2 control handles.

9.7 Battery Charger

The choice of the correct battery charger depends on the bat-
tery capacity installed and the charging time required.
Semi-traction batteries can be charged with an initial charge
current of 16 A per 100 Ah, maximum.
With a charger with a maximum initial charge current of 10 A per
100 Ah, the battery will be recharged in about 14 hours, which
is acceptable in most cases.
Vetus can supply the following chargers specially designed for
charging semi-traction batteries:
- 25 A at 24 V, suitable for 1 set of 2 batteries 12 V - 230 Ah,
connected in series
- 50 A at 24 V, suitable for 1 set of 4 batteries 12 V - 230 Ah,
connected in series/parallel
- 65 A at 24 V, suitable for 1 set of 6 batteries, 12 V - 230 Ah,
connected in series/parallel.
With batteries connected in parallel, it is preferred that the
batteries are charged separately using an diode splitter.

9.8 Dockside connection

The battery charger can be set up on board or on the dockside.
When the battery charger is installed on board, a suitably safe
dockside connection for 230 Volt alternating current should be
made.
When the battery charger is on the dockside, the connection
between the charger and batteries should be made using a
plug-socket connector which cannot be connected the wrong
way.
Consult Vetus for suitable plug-socket connectors.
Take the necessary measures to prevent moving off while the
battery charger is still connected.
• Vetus battery chargers are fitted with a fully isolated relay
contact. This contact can be fitted into the control circuit wire
of the controller. See Diagram 14-6 on page 66.

9.9 Extra instruments

The relevant Manual should be consulted when installing extra
instruments, for example a Voltmeter, Ammeter or Ah-meter.
For your information, Diagram 14-7 shows how these instru-
ments can be connected.

9.10 Explanation of connection diagrams

For connection diagrams, see page 64.
Connection diagrams show installations fitted with 2 to 8 semi-
traction batteries.
With the exception of diagram 14-4, the battery chargers shown
are as recommended in 9.7.
Diagram 14-4 shows a smaller charger than the ideal recom-
mendation! With this installation, the charging time for fully dis-
charged batteries will be about 20 hours.
The diode splitters shown may not have a voltage drop unless
it is possible to compensate the battery charger for this voltage
drop!
With standard diode splitters the output voltage is 0.6 Volt less
than the input voltage.
Compensation means increasing the output of the battery
charger by 0.6 Volt to get the correct charging voltage at the
output of the diode splitter.
Vetus can supply suitable diode splitters with a negligible volt-
age drop:
- With 2 outputs, Art. code: 'DIODE1252'.
- With 3 outputs, Art. code: 'DODE1253'.
