Special features

The LEICA APO-MACRO-SUMMARIT-S 120mm f/2.5 is a lens designed for the Leica S SLR
system. Due to the 30x45 mm sensor size in Leica S cameras its angle of view corresponds
to a 96 mm lens in 35 mm format systems.
The LEICA APO-MACRO-SUMMARIT-S 120mm f/2.5 stands out with its extremely high speed
for a macro lens of this focal length and relative to the format. At the same time, it delivers
excellent contrast and very high resolution even with at full stop and across the entire image
field, which is noticeable when reproducing minute details with the infinity setting, for exam-
ple. At close range – which results in an image half the actual size- the performance is similar:
There is just a slight deterioration in contrast in the extreme corners of the image. This per-
formance can only be slightly improved by stopping down.
The vignetting characteristic of any optical system is a maximum of 1 stop, which means that
it is rarely noticeable in practical photography. It can be further reduced by stopping down.
Distortion is minimal at less than 0.25 % and is hardly perceptible in the image.
A total of 9 lens elements are used to achieve this exceptional performance. To correct
chromatic aberrations, they include three lens elements made of glass types with anomalous
partial dispersion, two of them with exceptionally low dispersion. To maintain the excellent
image performance in the close up range, focusing is carried out not just by moving the front
assembly but by also moving the last two lenses independently.
