Failure to understand and observe the following warn-
ings and limitations may adversely affect respirator
performance and result in sickness or death
Do not use with parts or accessories other than those manu-
factured by Sundström as described in these User Instructions,
the SR 500 Powered Air-Purifying Respirator User Instructions,
or on the NIOSH Approval Label for the SR 500 PAPR system.
The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA) Standard 29 CFR 1910.134 and the Canadian CSA
Standard Z94.4 require a written respirator program and
appropriate training before occupational use of this respirator.
Your employer must provide compressed breathing air that
meets at least the requirements of the specification for Grade D
breathing air, as described in the Compressed Gas Association
Commodity Specification G-7.1-1997 in the United States. In
Canada, refer to CSA standard Z180.1, table for quality of
compressed breathing air.
The SR 520 and SR 530 hoods do not provide eye and face
protection. When exposed to eye and face hazards, the respira-
tor wearer must wear eye and/or face protectors appropriate
to the hazard.
Do not use these respiratory protection inlet coverings and the
SR 500 Powered Air-Purifying Respirator in atmospheres for
which they were not designed or certified by NIOSH including:
– Oxygen deficient or enriched atmospheres.
– Where contaminant concentrations are unknown or are
Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH).
– Where maximum contaminant concentrations mandated by
specific government standards are exceeded.
Before you enter a hazardous atmosphere wearing the SR 500
Powered Air-Purifying Respirator, you must inspect the SR 500
PAPR fan unit and components of the respirator, complete a
user performance check, and don the respirator according to
the SR 500 PAPR User Instructions and these User Instruc-
tions. Always properly don this respirator in an area where the
air is clean before entering a hazardous atmosphere.
Do not use the SR 500 Powered Air-Purifying Respirator with
respiratory protection inlet covering if the respirator fails any
of the requirements of the user inspection and performance
checks. Do not use the respirator until all necessary repairs
have been made and the respirator passes the performance
check.
Do not remove the respirator while you are in a hazardous
atmosphere. Do not remove the respirator until you are in clean
air. Leave the contaminated area immediately if any of the following
conditions occur.
– Any part of the system becomes damaged.
– Airflow into the respiratory protection inlet covering
decreases or stops.
– Breathing becomes difficult.
– You feel dizzy or your vision is impaired.
– You taste or smell contaminants.
– Your face, eyes, nose or mouth become irritated.
– You suspect that the concentration of contaminants may
have reached levels at which this respirator may no longer
provide adequate protection.
If excessive wear and/or damage to the respirator or its
components is observed at any time, do not use the respirator
until all necessary repairs have been made and the wearer
has successfully completed the User Performance Check
described in the SR 500 Powered Air-Purifying Respirator
User Instructions.
The respiratory protection inlet coverings materials are not
flame resistant and must not be used around heat, flames or
sparks, or in explosive atmospheres.
If the seal of the respiratory protection inlet covering is not firmly
in contact with the face or neck, the pressure necessary for
maintaining the correct protection level will not be established.
The seal of the respiratory protection inlet covering against the
face or neck must be assured. This may be difficult to achieve
if the user has a beard or sideburns.
If the user is exposed to very high work intensity, a partial
vacuum may occur in the hood or face shield during inhalation
which may involve the risk of contaminated atmosphere getting
into the respiratory protection inlet covering.
The protection level may be reduced if the equipment is used
in surroundings in which high wind speeds occur.
Be aware that the breathing hose might become tangled and
get caught up by something in your surroundings.
Never lift or carry the equipment by the breathing hose.
Do not soak respirator inlet coverings in cleaning solutions
or solvents.
Do not wipe the respiratory protection inlet coverings with
strong solvents such as MEK, acetone, or toluene as these
may damage or distort materials.
Handling, transportation and disposal of spent batteries,
cartridges, filters or respiratory protection inlet coverings
must comply with all applicable federal, state, and local laws
and regulations.

3. Unpacking, Packing List, Assembly

3.1 Unpacking
Check that the respiratory protection inlet covering is complete
in accordance with the packing list and has not been dam-
aged in transit. Locate the User Instructions and read and
understand prior to attempting to use the product. If damage
is evident or if technical support is needed contact your
supervisor, respirator program manager, User Instructions, or
for technical support call Sundström in the U.S.A. and Canada
at 1- 877- SUNDSTROM.
