General info

Theline connecting the harness and the anchorage
point mustmeet two criteria: the line must be able
to arrest the fall and the energy released must be
absorbed. An energy absorber reducesthe energy in
the event of a fall to max. 6 kN. If no energyabsorber
is used, the impact on the body could result in serious
injuries or even death. For that reason SKALT has
integrated energy absorbersinto its lifelines as a
standard feature.
SKALTsuppliesdifferent types of lifelines with either static or
elastic ropes. Both single and double lifelines are available.
In addition to lifelines, SKALTalso offers adjustable work
positioning lines.
Lifetime: Maximum life time of Skalt lanyards is 12 years from
date of manufacturing or 10 years from first date of use. Lifetime
depends on use and storage of the product.
The safe use of fall protection can only be guaranteed
when the guidelines of this user manual are strictly followed.
There are two sorts of lines/lanyards that will be discussed in
this user manual:
• Single Lanyard (SKALTtypes Substito 1,5,
Substito Scaff, Fall Rav)
• Double Lanyard (SKALTFall Rav Double)
The SKALTtypes Substito 1.5, Substito scaff, Fall Rav and
Fall Rav Double can be used as a fall arrest because of the
integrated shock absorber. Thelanyards are made from
kernmantel line or polyester webbing and can arrest a
force of minimum 22 Kilo Newton, before damage or
tearing will occur.
Shock Absorbers
Lanyards may not be used without shock absorber (NEN 355).
Thereforethese lanyards are always equipped with an
integrated shock absorberthat will reduce the power of a fall
to a maximum of 6 Newton kilograms(=600Kg). Each shock
absorber consists of a compact folded strap in a package that
is attached to the harness. During a fall this strap is pulled
out of the package stitch by stitch. Thisgreatly reduces the
energy and the speed of the fall, so that the impact results in
a far smaller burden on the body.
The absorber does not work with a force less then 2 KN.
General Guidelines CConcerning the use of the Lanyard
with Shock Absorber:
• Both shock absorbers and lanyards are irrepairable after a
fall and should be replaced by new ones.
• Both shock absorbers and lanyards require an inspection
beforehand of the additional fall distance in the event of the
shock absorber being completely drawn out during a fall.
The distance should be added to the possible fall distance,
and the total distance should be considered for working at
height. If this distance cannot be attained, then another
measure such as a fall protection block should be used.
Single Lanyard
SKALTtypes Substito 1,5, Substito Scaff, Fall Rav.
Single lanyards are primarily used horizontally, f.e. when
working from a man basket, a mobile elevating work
platform or on a roof. Thisinevitably limits the working area
inevitably limited, which may be a disadvantage. User also
risk a serious fall in case he is unable to attach the single
lanyard high enough.
Double Lanyard
SKALTtypes Fall Rav Double
If not only horizontal movement but also vertical movement
is needed, as in pylons and on roofs, a double lanyard must
be used. The advantage is that the user can climb safely by
fastening the second line before unlocking the first one.
By attaching the lanyard is attached as high as possible a
safe and unlimited working area can be created.

Fall distance

It is important to note that the use of a lanyard always
involves an added fall distance. A shock absorber has a
maximum of 1.5 meters of extra length, and a lanyard –
including the shock absorber-has an average of 2 meters.
If we take the maximumlength of a person to be
1.75 metres, then a lanyard cannot be used in places
where the height is under 5.25 meters. Moreover we
need to reckon with a safety margin of 1 meter.
Thereforeyou need a free space of at least 6.25 metres to
work safely with a lanyard (see illustration on page 2).
