Charging the Battery
Test and, i fnecessary,
recharge
the battery after t he tractor has been
stored foraperiod oftime.
A voltmeteror load testershouldread 12.6volts(DC) or higher
acrossthe batteryterminals.See Figure30.

Storage
Whenstoringthetractorfor extendedperiods,disconnectthe negative
batterycable.It is not necessaryto removethe battery.
All batteriesdischargeduringstorage.Keepthe exteriorof the battery
clean,especiallythe top. A dirty batterywill dischargemorerapidly.
The batterymustbe storedwith a full charge.A dischargedbatterycan
freezesoonerthan a chargedbattery.A fully chargedbatterywill store
longerin coldtemperatures than hot. Referto Figure30.
Recharge batterywhenever thespecificgravityreading on a temperature
compensating hydrometer i s lessthan 1.225.SeeFigure30.
Jump Starting
Failureto use this startingprocedurecan causesparking,and the
gasesin the batteryto explode.

Attachtheend of the redjumpercableto the positiveterminal(+)
of the chargedbattery.
2.
Attachtheotherend of the redjumpercableto the positive
terminal(+)of the lowchargebattery.
3.
Attachtheend of theblack jumpercable to the negativeterminal
of the chargedbattery.
4.
Attachtheotherend of the blackjumper cableto the frameof the
unitwith the low chargebattery.
Servicing
Electrical
System
Thereis one fuse locatedin the wiringbetweenthe batteryand ignition
startswitch.This is a standardplug-intype automotive fuse ratedat
20 amp. Alwaysusethe same capacityfuse for replacement. I f the
electricalsystemdoes notfunction,checkfor a blownfuse.

to schedule electricalsystemservicefrom SearsParts& Repair.
Thereare severalsafety switchesin the electricalsystem(PTOSwitch,
PTOClutch,ParkingBrake/DriveControlLeverSwitch,SeatSwitch
and No Cut in ReverseSwitch). If a functionof the safetyinterlock
systemdescribedearlier is not functioningproperly,havethe electrical
systemcheckedby yourSearsServiceCenteror to scheduleservice,
simplycontact Searsat 1-800-4-MY-HOME®.

TIRE MAINTENANCE
Checkthe tireair pressurebeforeeachuse. Inflationpressureof the
reartires is importantfor stabilitywhilethe moweris in operation.If
the tire diameteris notequal betweenthe two tires,the mowerwill pull
to one side. Keepthe tires inflatedto the recommended pressures.
Improperinflationwill shortenthe tire servicelife. Seethe tire sidewall
for properinflationpressures.Observethe followingguidelines:
Donot inflatea tireabovethe maximumpressureshownon the
sidewallof the tire.
Donot reinflate a tire thathasbeen runflat or seriouslyunder
inflated. Havea qualifiedtiremechanicinspect a nd servicethe tire.
Balanceinflation pressurebetweenthe rear tires to help maintain
straighttravel(seetire sidewall for properinflationpressure).
Keepthevalve caps tightenedto preventair pressureloss.
USING THE DECK WASH SYSTEM
Whenusingthe deck washsystem,neverengagethe deck fromany
positionotherthan theoperator'sseat of the tractor.Donot usean
assistantor engagedeck in the presenceof anybystanders.
Usethe DeckWash Systemto rinsegrass clippingsfrom the deck's
undersideand preventthe buildupof corrosivechemicals.Complete
the followingstepsafter each mowing:
NOTE: Makecertainthemachine's discharge chuteis directedaway
from people,children,animals,andyourhouse,garage,parkedcars,etc.

Attachthe nozzleadapterto a standardgardenhoseconnected
to a water supply.
2.
Movethetractorto an areawithin reachof the hosewherethe dis-
persalof wet grassclippingsis notobjectionable toyou. Disengage
the PTO,engagethe parkingbrake,and stoptheengine.
3.
Pull backthe lock collarof the nozzleadapterand pushthe
adapteronto one of the deckwash nozzlesat eitherend of the
mowerdeck. Releasethe lock collarto lock the adapteron the
nozzle.See Figure31.
