2. Description
We have manufactured the WELLER WHS 40D micro-processor controlled soldering
station especially for the ambitious electronic hobbyist. It is the correct tool for
carrying out professional soldering jobs in the electronic world. The digital electronic
control is particularly useful when working on thermally sensitive components. The
soldering iron temperature can be adjusted through the range 150°C – 450°C via the
2 UP/DOWN buttons. Both the temperature setting and the actual temperatures are
digitally displayed as part of the temperature control system. A light in the display
provides a visual check. The associated WH 40 soldering iron is supplied with a safety
extra-low voltage and has a power rating of 40 W at 200°C.
The "long-life" soldering bit has been given a galvanised protective coating. This
protective coating considerably extends the working life of the soldering bit. The
soldering iron holder and the cleaning sponge are integrated in the station housing.

3. Commissioning
Fit the stowage spring and the funnel; this is done by pushing the stowage spring
clamp into the specially provided recess (1). Soak the cleaning sponge (2) in water.
Place the soldering iron in the safe stowage position. Plug the soldering iron plug (10)
into the connection socket (4) in the control unit. Compare the mains voltage against
the details given on the nameplate. If the mains voltage is correct, plug the controller
into the mains. Remove any combustible objects from the vicinity of the soldering
iron. Use the mains switch (9) to switch on the unit. A self-test of all of the display
elements (5) that are used is carried out when the unit is switched on. The pre-set
temperature (the setting) is displayed for a short period afterwards. The electronics
switch over to the actual temperature display afterwards. A red light (6) in the display
(5) illuminates afterwards. This light shows that the heating pulse is present and is
used as a visual check.

Temperature adjustment
In principle, the digital display (5) always shows the actual temperature. The display
changes to the actual pre-set temperature if the "UP" (8) or "DOWN" (7) buttons are
pressed. The pre-set temperature setting (flashing display) can now be changed by
tapping or permanently holding down the "UP" (8) or "DOWN" (7) buttons in the
corresponding direction. If the button is permanently held down, the pre-setting will
change quickly. The display changes back to the current temperature automatically
approximately 2 sec after the button is released.
4. Working tips
The flux has a cleaning effect with regard to the dissolution of oxide coatings on many
metals. Flux-cored solder is used virtually exclusively during electronic soldering.
Rosin should be used as the flux, which is a relatively non-aggressive flux.
Always ensure that the soldering bit is well tinned before taking a break from
soldering or stowing the soldering iron. Each mechanical operation damages the
galvanic protective coating of the soldering bit and drastically reduces the working life
of the soldering bit.
The soldering bit (12) and the clamping screw (11) should be removed from the
soldering iron at regular intervals in order to prevent "seizing up".
