5 Assembly and commissioning

Danger of injury if assembled under pressure
Injuries and damage to the device or system components may occur if the
pressure is not switched off before beginning assembly.
Make sure that the relevant system part is without pressure before you as-
u
semble the product.
Due to the magnetic measuring principle, observe the following:
Strong external magnetic fields (e.g. welding devices) or ferromag-
netic add-on parts located in the area of the proximity switch could
possibly impair the distance measuring sensor function.

5.1 Assembling the SM6-AL distance measuring sensor

The in-range display provides support during assembly:
LED 1 lights up yellow when the magnetic piston is within the measurement
range.
1. Insert the sensor holders to the left and right into the sensor slots. Note the
number of sensor holder pairs indicated in the table in Fig. 3.
2. Position the sensor from above in the center of the dovetail guide and screw
down the sensor holders uniformly. Torque: M
3. Connect the distance measuring sensor to a
suitable power supply (see "Technical data") and Fig. 4.
4. Check whether the sensor records the entire cylinder stroke (LED/in-range dis-
play = must light up yellow).

5.2 Commissioning the SM6-AL distance measuring sensor

Risk of uncontrolled actuator movements when the pneumatics are
switched on
There is a danger of personal injury if the system is in an undefined state.
Put the system in a defined state before switching it on.
u
Commissioning may only be carried out by qualified electrical or pneumatic per-
sonnel or an instructed person under the direction and supervision of qualified
personnel (see "Personnel qualifications").
The measurement range does not have to be set. If you do not teach-
in, the maximum possible measurement range will be used as the de-
fault.

5.2.1 Display of the operating state

See Fig. 6-8
The operating state of the distance measuring sensor is displayed by means of 2
two-color LEDs.
• If no LED is lit up, no supply voltage is applied.
• The status of the distance measuring sensor is displayed by means of lit LEDs
(see table below).
• Flashing LEDs (3 Hz) indicate the respective configuration mode.
LED
Function
1
Yellow
Magnetic piston in the measurement range
Red
Internal sensor error
2
Green
Voltage output active
Blue
Current output active

5.2.2 Adjusting the measurement range

See Fig. 6
The measurement range is set to the entire measuring length of the respective
sensor in the default setting.
The control panel for the sensor is protected against improper operation with a
defined "tapping combination". All settings therefore always begin with the fol-
lowing combination: tap (0.5 s), release (0.5 s), tap and hold (depending on set-
ting, from 2 to 8 s).
The zero point and end value of the measurement range can be adjusted to the
stroke to be measured via the control panel as follows:
AVENTICS™ SM6-AL | R412017927-BAL-001-AF | English
WARNING
= 0.8 Nm (see Fig. 3).
A
WARNING
1. Move the magnetic piston to the position for the zero point.
2. Tap the control panel (t < 0.5 s) to activate the setting mode.
3. Directly afterward (t < 0.5 s), touch the control panel until LED 1 flashes yellow
(t  2 s).
The zero point is saved once the finger is removed.
4. Next, move the magnetic piston to the end point position (t < 90 s).
5. Briefly tap the control panel (t < 1 s) to save the end point (LED 1 lights up yel-
low).
Reset option (see "Resetting the measurement range (zero point, end point) to
factory settings").
If the zero point is outside the measurement range (LED 1 flashes in
short intervals), the teach-in process will be interrupted.
Unfinished teach-in processes will be canceled after 90 s (time-out).
The previously stored measurement range remains active.

5.2.3 Checking the zero point and end point settings

See Fig. 5
• Depending on the configuration, after approaching the zero point, a value
of U = 0 V or I = 4 mA is present at the corresponding output pin.
• Depending on the configuration, after approaching the end point, a value
of U = 10 V or I = 20 mA is present at the corresponding output pin.
In both positions, the LED 1 must light up yellow.
If these conditions are not met, the measurement range must be re-adjusted. Al-
ternatively, it can be reset to factory settings.

5.2.4 Selecting the analog output (current or voltage signal)

See Fig. 7
The current output is activated at the factory.
As analog output, a voltage or current signal can be selected via the control
panel.
1. Tap the control panel (t < 0.5 s) to activate the setting mode.
2. Directly afterward (t < 0.5 s), touch the control panel until LED 2 flashes (t =
5 s).
Next (t < 10 s), by tapping the screen again (t < 2 s), you can switch between
current output (LED 2 flashes blue) and voltage output (LED 2 flashes green).
3. Touch the control panel for a longer period (t > 2 s) to save the active settings.
The process will be canceled if more than 10 s pass without an action.
The last setting will remain in effect.
5.2.5 Resetting the measurement range (zero point, end point) to
factory settings
See Fig. 8
1. Tap the control panel (t < 0.5 s) to activate the setting mode.
2. Directly afterward (t < 0.5 s), touch the control panel until LED 1 and LED 2
flash (t = 8 s).
After you remove your finger, only LED 1 flashes yellow and indicates the sys-
tem is ready to be reset
3. Directly afterward (t < 10 s), briefly tap the control panel (t < 1 s) to reset the
sensor measurement range to the factory settings.
The process will be canceled if more than 10 s pass without an action.
The last setting will remain in effect.

6 IO-Link configuration

The IODD files and the "Technical Information" with English and Ger-
man language content for the SM6-AL distance measuring sensor can
be found in the Media Center at www.aventics.com/de/media-centre.
You can use configuration software from various manufacturers for the IO-Link
configuration. Before you can use the sensor, it has to be recognized by the IO-
Link master. This process is either automatic or must be completed manually.
Please observe the documentation for the IO-Link master used.
u
So that IO-Link communication is available on pin 4, you have to choose the cur-
rent output for IO-Link operation. Figure 4 shows the connection assignment.
(see "Selecting the analog output (current or voltage signal)").
