2. PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS
RISK OF EXPLOSIVE GASES.
2.1 NEVER smoke or allow a
spark or flame in the vicinity
of a battery or engine.
2.2 Remove personal metal
items such as rings, bracelets, necklaces
and watches when working with a lead-acid
battery. A lead-acid battery can produce a
short-circuit current high enough to weld
a ring or the like to metal, causing a severe
burn.
2.3 Be extra cautious about reducing the
risk of dropping a metal tool onto the
battery. It might spark or short-circuit the
battery or other electrical parts to cause an
explosion.
2.4 Consider having someone nearby
come to your aid when you work near a
lead-acid battery.
2.5 Have plenty of fresh water and soap
nearby if battery acid contacts your skin,
clothing or eyes.
2.6 Always wear gloves and safety glasses
when working with batteries. And remove
jewelry or watches before servicing a
battery.
ORIGINAL INSTRUCTIONS
2.7 If battery acid contacts your skin or
clothing, immediately wash the area with
soap and water. If acid enters your eye,
immediately flood the eye with cold
running water for at least 10 minutes and
get medical attention right away.
2.8 If battery acid is accidentally
swallowed, seek medical attention
immediately. DO NOT induce vomiting.
Subject to medical advice, drink milk, the
whites of eggs or water.
2.9
WARNING: Battery posts,
terminals and related
accessories can expose you to chemicals
including lead and lead compounds,
which are known to the state of California
to cause cancer and birth defects or other
reproductive harm. Wash hands after
handling. For more information go to

3. PREPARING THE BATTERY
RISK OF CONTACT WITH BATTERY ACID.
BATTERY ACID IS A HIGHLY CORROSIVE
SULFURIC ACID.
3.1 Be sure
the area
around the
battery is well
ventilated
while the battery is being tested.
3.2 Clean the battery terminals. Be careful
to keep corrosion from coming in contact
with your eyes, nose and mouth.
3.3 Inspect the battery for a cracked or
broken case or cover. If the battery is
damaged, do not use the tester.
ORIGINAL INSTRUCTIONS
3.4 If the battery is not a sealed
maintenance-free battery, check the level
of each cell and if necessary, add distilled
water until the battery acid reaches the
level specified by the manufacturer. This
helps purge excessive gas from the cells.
Do not overfill.
3.5 If it is necessary to remove the battery
from the vehicle to test it, always remove
the ground terminal from the battery
first. Ensure all vehicle accessories are
unplugged, disabled or otherwise off to
ensure you do not cause any arcing.
