Verify you have received all the accessories that come with the Abbe Refractometer:
- Thermometer up to 100º with steel socket included
- Known refraction index (nD 1.5168) test part
- Disolution of naphtalene monobromide
Installation
!
Before starting this instrument, read carefully this manual.
BEFORE CONNECTING OR OPERATING WITH THIS INSTRUMENT, READ THESE
!
Place the refractometer in a flat horizontal table, avoiding humidity, heat, dust and
vibrations. Keep it, if possible out of magnetic source, electric field or electric machine
able to generate high frecuency field.

These microscopes have a Schuko plug. This plug must be connected to a plugging
device connected to ground. The grounded device must be at hand to be able to discon-
nect the plug quickly in case of emergency.
Neither the manufacturer nor the supplier will assume any responsability for the
damages caused to the microscope or for any other damage suffered by any person due to
the neglect of the right process of electric connection. The alternating voltage must be 220-
24 v, 50-60Hz.
Calibration
!
Before using the first time, you must check if the refractometer is well calibrated, that´s
why it is included piece to test the known refraction index.

If you put two drops of naphthalene bromide on refraction prism and
you place then the smooth test piece item over them, you can see though
the eyefield the line that separates light and dark coloured parts (pic. 4).
Once the dispersion is corrected, you agree inferior side scale with the
amount in the test piece. If the line that divides light and dark parties do
not meet in the center of the crossed lines seen in the top, you must to turn
the calibration screw (3.3) until you have them met. This screw is covered
by a lid, unbolt it and with the Allen key supplied with the equipment, turn the screw up to
the point required.

Once the refractometer is calibrated, the screw do not be manipulated while measuring.
If you doubt about the refraction index estimation when testing, please, calibrate it again
from the beginning.

The ridged incident prism face, the smooth refraction prism face and test piece must be
clean with the aid of an absorbent cotton gauze wet with a 1:1 absolute alcohol and ether
mixture in order to avoid from the dirtiness that have an effect on image brightness and
measurement accuracy.
Testing work
!
Plug the refractometer and turn on the interruptor (1.13) to get the scale display lighted.
Do as the instructions say depending on the kind of sample whose refraction index or Brix
degrees you want to get.
