II Lockheed P-38 Lightning e stato, senza dubbio, uno degli aerei
piu originali per design e layout aerodinamico della seconda guer-
ra mondiale. Fu un caccia pesante rivoluzionario per la fusoliera a
doppia trave, in cui erano installati i due motori, con il pilota siste-
mato in un abitacolo avanzato al centra dell ' aereo. Grazie ai suoi
due propulsori Allison V-1710 a 12 cilindri a V da 1425 CV ciascuno
raffreddati a liquido il P-38 raggiungeva la velocita massima di oltre
660 Km/h. Era armato con quattro mitragliatrici Browning da 12,7
mm. e un cannone Hispano M2 che garantiva una buona potenza
di fuoco. Non molto manovrabile rispetto ai caccia monomotore
dell ' epoca ma molto robusto e stabile. Aveva come punto di forza
una elevata autonomia di volo molto utile nel teatro operative del
Pacifico oppure nelle mission! di scorta ai bombardieri a lungo rag -
gio sui cieli Europei. II P-38, per la sua caratteristica forma e per le
sue temibili caratteristiche operative, venne soprannominato dai
pilot! nemici " il diavolo a due code".

Die Lockheed P-38 Lightning war zweifellos eines der originell-
sten Flugzeuge des Zweiten Weltkriegs, was das Design und die
aerodynamische Auslegung betrifft. Es handelte sich um ein schw-
eres Jagdflugzeug, das wegen seines zweistrahligen Rumpfes, in
dem die beiden Triebwerke eingebaut waren, revolutionar war,
wobei der Pilot in einem Cockpit in der Mitte des Flugzeugs un-
tergebracht war. Dank der beiden flussigkeitsgekuhlten 1425 PS
starken Allison-V-1710-V-Motoren mit 12 Zylindern erreichte die
P-38 eine Hochstgeschwindigkeit von uber 660 km/h. Sie war mit
vier 12,7-mm-Maschinengewehren der Marke Browning und einer
Hispano M2-Kanone bewaffnet, die eine gute Feuerkraft gewahr-
leistete. Nicht sehr mandvrierfahig im Vergleich zu den einmotori-
gen Kampfflugzeugen der damaligen Zeit, aber sehr robust und
stabil. Ihre Starke war eine hohe Flugreichweite, die im pazifischen
Einsatzgebiet Oder bei den Begleitmissionen mit Langstrecken-
bombern im europaischen Luftraum sehr nutzlich war. Die P-38
wurde wegen ihrer charakteristischen Form und ihrer furchtein-
floBenden Betriebseigenschaften von den gegnerischen Piloten
„der zweischwanzige Teufel" genannt.

The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was certainly one of the foremost
aircraft of WW2 in terms of aerodynamic structure and design. It
was a revolutionary heavy fighter with a twin-boom fuselage where
the two engines were installed. The pilot was accommodated in a
leading edge cockpit at the centre of the aircraft. The P-38 could
reach a top speed of over 660 km/h thanks to its two 12 cylinders
liquid cooled V-1710 Allison engines, each capable of l,425hp. It
was armed with four Browning 12.7 mm machine guns and one
Hispano M2 cannon which ensured highly effective firepower. The
P38 was not particularly manoeuvrable compared to other single -
engine fighters of the period, but it was very robust and stable. It ' s
huge versatility made it a key aircraft both on operations in the Pa -
cific theatre and on escort missions for long-range bombers over
Europe. The P-38 with its characteristic shape and its ' fear effect'
was nicknamed ' the fork-tailed devil' by enemy pilots.
El Lockheed P-38 Lightning fue, sin duda, uno de los aviones mas
originales por diseno y disposicion aerodinamicos de la Segunda
Guerra Mundial. Fue un caza pesado revolucionario por el fuselaje
de doble viga, donde estaban instalados los dos motores, con el pi-
loto situado en un habitaculo avanzado en el centra del avion. Gra -
cias a sus dos propulsores Allison V-1710 de 12 cilindros en V de
1425 CV cada uno, refrigerados por liquido, el P-38 alcanzaba una
velocidad maxima de mas de 660 km/h. Estaba armado con cuatro
ametralladoras Browning de 12,7 mm y un canon Hispano M2 que
garantizaba una buena potencia de fuego. No era muy maniobrable
respecto al caza con un solo motor de la epoca, pero era mucho
mas robusto y estable. Tenia como punto de fuerza una elevada
autonomfa de vuelo, muy util en el marco operative del Pacffico o
en las misiones de escolta de los bombarderos de largo radio en
los cielos europeos. El P-38, por su forma peculiar y sus temibles
caracteristicas operativas, recibio el sobrenombre por los pilotos
enemigos de "diablo con dos colas».

Allison V-1710 a 12 cylindres en V refroidis par liquide de 1425 ch
chacun, le P-38 atteignait une vitesse de pointe de plus de 660
km/h. II etait arme de quatre mitrailleuses Browning de 12,7 mm
et d ' un canon Hispano M2 qui garantissait une bonne puissance de
feu. Pas tres maniable par rapport aux chasseurs monomoteurs de
I ' epoque mais tres robuste et stable. Sa grande autonomie de vol,
tres utile dans le theatre operationnel du Pacifique ou dans les mis -
sions d ' escorte de bombardiers a longue portee au-dessus du ciel
europeen, etait son point fort. Le P-38, en raison de sa forme cara-
cteristique et de ses redoutables caracteristiques operationnelles,
a ete surnomme «le diable a deux queues » par les pilotes ennemis.
