The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was certainly one of the foremost
aircraft of WW2 in terms of aerodynamic structure and design. It
was a revolutionary heavy fighter with a twin-boom fuselage where
the two engines were installed. The pilot was accommodated in a
leading edge cockpit at the centre of the aircraft. The P-38 could
reach a top speed of over 660 km/h thanks to its two 12 cylinders
liquid cooled V-1710 Allison engines, each capable of 1,425hp. It
was armed with four Browning 12.7 mm machine guns and one
Hispano M2 cannon which ensured highly effective firepower. The
P38 was not particularly manoeuvrable compared to other single-
engine fighters of the period, but it was very robust and stable. It's
huge versatility made it a key aircraft both on operations in the Pa-
cific theatre and on escort missions for long-range bombers over
Europe. The P-38 with its characteristic shape and its 'fear effect'
was nicknamed 'the fork-tailed devil' by enemy pilots.

Il Lockheed P-38 Lightning è stato, senza dubbio, uno degli aerei
più originali per design e layout aerodinamico della seconda guer-
ra mondiale. Fu un caccia pesante rivoluzionario per la fusoliera a
doppia trave, in cui erano installati i due motori, con il pilota siste-
mato in un abitacolo avanzato al centro dell'aereo. Grazie ai suoi
due propulsori Allison V-1710 a 12 cilindri a V da 1425 CV ciascuno
raffreddati a liquido il P-38 raggiungeva la velocità massima di oltre

Die Lockheed P-38 Lightning war zweifellos eines der originell-
sten Flugzeuge des Zweiten Weltkriegs, was das Design und die

eres Jagdflugzeug, das wegen seines zweistrahligen Rumpfes, in
dem die beiden Triebwerke eingebaut waren, revolutionär war,

tergebracht war. Dank der beiden flüssigkeitsgekühlten 1425 PS
starken Allison-V-1710-V-Motoren mit 12 Zylindern erreichte die
P-38 eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von über 660 km/h. Sie war mit
vier 12,7-mm-Maschinengewehren der Marke Browning und einer
Hispano M2-Kanone bewaffnet, die eine gute Feuerkraft gewähr-
leistete. Nicht sehr manövrierfähig im Vergleich zu den einmotori-
gen Kampfflugzeugen der damaligen Zeit, aber sehr robust und
stabil. Ihre Stärke war eine hohe Flugreichweite, die im pazifischen
Einsatzgebiet oder bei den Begleitmissionen mit Langstrecken-
bombern im europäischen Luftraum sehr nützlich war. Die P-38
wurde wegen ihrer charakteristischen Form und ihrer furchtein-
flößenden Betriebseigenschaften von den gegnerischen Piloten
„der zweischwänzige Teufel" genannt.

ception et son aspect aérodynamique. C'était un chasseur lourd
révolutionnaire de par son fuselage à double poutre, dans lequel
les deux moteurs étaient installés, le pilote étant placé dans un
cockpit avancé au centre de l'avion. Grâce à ses deux propulseurs
Allison V-1710 à 12 cylindres en V refroidis par liquide de 1425 ch
chacun, le P-38 atteignait une vitesse de pointe de plus de 660
km/h. Il était armé de quatre mitrailleuses Browning de 12,7 mm
et d'un canon Hispano M2 qui garantissait une bonne puissance de
feu. Pas très maniable par rapport aux chasseurs monomoteurs de
l'époque mais très robuste et stable. Sa grande autonomie de vol,
très utile dans le théâtre opérationnel du Pacifique ou dans les mis-
sions d'escorte de bombardiers à longue portée au-dessus du ciel
européen, était son point fort. Le P-38, en raison de sa forme cara-
