ZONES OF USE OF ATEX PUMPS
Areas defined as G (gas): Valid for zones 1 and 2.
• Zone 1: Location where an explosive atmosphere consisting of a
mixture of air and flammable substances in the form of gas, vapour
or mist may occasionally occur (excluding gas which may be present
in mines, firedamp). This explosive atmosphere is liable to occur
occasionally in normal operation or foreseeable damage to the
equipment.
• Zone 2: Location where an explosive atmosphere consisting of a
mixture of air and flammable substances in the form of gas, vapour
or mist is not likely to occur (excluding gas which may be present in
mines, firedamp). Such an atmosphere is not likely to occur during
normal operation of the equipment and, if it does, would be
of short duration.
USE IN POTENTIALLY EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERES SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS
WARNING: FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS MENTIONED IN THIS CHAPTER TO AVOID RISKS OF SERIOUS INJURIES OR
!
DEATH AND DAMAGE OF THE EQUIPMENT AND ITS ENVIRONMENT.
• The information in this chapter is a complement to the information
provided in the pump manual. This chapter reoffers only to the
special cautions and procedures that shall be followed when working
in a potentially explosive atmosphere. Read always both manuals
before starting to use the pump.
• Always respect the working conditions for the pump mentioned in its
instruction manual.
• Pump installation, piping, commissioning, maintenance and repair
must be done by qualified personnel.
• Be sure that the pump is used following its marking and in approved zones.
• Be sure that the pump is well primed before start pumping flammable
or explosive fluids.
• Do not close the suction line and do not adjust pump speed or
operation acting on it.
• Check regularly for pump leaks.
• To avoid risks due to static electricity, always use conductive elements
for the connection of the pump. The use of non-conductive elements
external to the DF pumps is the responsibility of the end user.
• Additional equipment to the pump must be certified separately.
• Never use the pump with non conductive fluids in atmospheres with
IIC gas.
• When using the pump equipped with non-conductive diaphragms
that exceed the maximum allowable surface area, as defined in UNE-
EN ISO 80079-36 section 6.7.5 Table 8, the following protection
methods must be applied:
- The equipment is always used to transfer electrically conductive
fluids, or
- The explosive environment is prevented from entering the pump
internals, i.e. dry running is avoided.
• Be sure to earth the pump.
• Must respect surface temperature considerations in explosive
atmospheres. Generally in the marking of ATEX products, the
temperature marked is the maximum temperature that the equipment
can reach. Since the DF pump would never exceed a temperature of
30 °C, the maximum temperature will depend on the fluid. DF
pumps comply with the UNE-EN ISO 80079-36 standard for safety,
marking the temperature limit for the groups of gases and vapours
for which this pump is intended.

Areas defined as D (dust): Valid for zones 21 and 22.
• Zone 21: Location where an explosive atmosphere consisting of a
mixture of air and combustible suspended particles (cloud of
flammable airborne dust) and non-conductive dust may occasionally
occur. This explosive atmosphere may occasionally occur during
normal operation or foreseeable damage to the equipment.
• Zone 22: Location where an explosive atmosphere consisting of a
mixture of air with combustible suspended particles (cloud of
flammable airborne dust) and non-conductive dust is not likely to
occur. Such an atmosphere is not likely to occur during normal
operation of the equipment and, if it does, would be
of short duration.
• For use in dusty explosive atmospheres, the temperature of the
medium must be taken into account as the surface temperature
when exceeding 30 °C.
• Never, under any circumstances, dismantle or open the equipment
(opening of the pump and dismantling of its various components) in
the presence of explosive atmospheres.
• In the presence of explosive atmospheres, service the pump far away
from them. Never, under any circumstances, dismantle or open the
equipment (opening the pump and dismantling its various
components) in the presence of explosive atmospheres.
• Clean the pump regularly and remove all dust accumulation on its
surface when working in a potential explosive atmosphere.
• Be sure all elements are well connected before running the pump.
Always use flexible connecting elements and install pump on silent
blocks to avoid vibrations.
• Be sure valves at the pump inlet and outlet are open before running
the pump.
• Avoid the pump to run dry. Install a detection system like a low level
detector in the fluid storage tank.
• Maintain and inspect the pump regularly. Make sure the pump is
serviced according to the service instructions by a qualified repair
station. Use only original SAMOA parts for servicing. Use of non
original parts will make the Ex approval invalid.
• When the pump is not operating normally it must be properly
maintained. It is the responsibility of the end user to respect the
conditions of use of the pump.
• The construction of the DF pumps ensures that the parts necessary to
achieve the safety level cannot be disassembled unintentionally.
Always check tightening torques and strictly follow the maintenance
instructions in the operating instructions.
• Provide guards when installing the pump to prevent objects from
falling on the pump.
